Canceling a Registration
How do I cancel my registration?
The most convenient way to cancel your plates/registration is online. You can also cancel your plates/registration at any full service Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) branch office.
To Process your cancellation ONLINE:
You may cancel your registration by visiting our Online Branch. You must provide your Registration Number, Massachusetts License/ID number, the last 4 digits of your SSN or FID number, and an email address. If it is a leased vehicle, you must enter the FID number provided by your leasing company.
If you have converted your license to another state, or do not have your Massachusetts license number available, you may locate it on your Massachusetts insurance policy or by contacting your insurance company.
You will be able to print out your Registration Cancellation Receipt once you have processed the transaction.
To Process your cancellation at a RMV BRANCH:
You may cancel your registration at any full service RMV Branch office with acceptable identification. You do NOT need to return the plates to the RMV.
To cancel a registration when there are two owners of a vehicle listed on the title/registration OR to cancel a registration on behalf of the vehicle owner(s):
What should I do with my Registration Cancellation Receipt?
You should provide a copy of the receipt to your insurance company. You may also need to provide your city or town Assessor's Office with a copy (refer to the Excise Tax Abatements section below).
What should I do with my physical plates?
Once your registration is canceled, you must recycle or destroy the plates.
Excise Tax Abatements
If you paid for a full year of excise tax, but did not have your vehicle registered for the full year, you may be eligible for an abatement. A copy of your receipt and proof that your vehicle is no longer in your possession may be required by your city or town Assessor's Office so they can process any excise tax adjustment that may be due.
