MassDOT Celebrates Whipple Road Bridge Reopening

BOSTON- Friday September 21, 2012- Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Highway Administrator Frank DePaola today joined state and local officials for the ribbon cutting ceremony and reopening of the Whipple Road Bridge that connects Wilmington and Billerica and also serves Tewksbury.

The $170,000 MassDOT project rehabilitated the locally-owned bridge, which closed in March 2010 following significant flood damage.

“Rebuilding transportation infrastructure across the Commonwealth means addressing projects both large and small in scope but always of critical importance to their local communities,” said Administrator DePaola.  “I am pleased to be here today to see the results of our collaboration with local and state leaders in reopening this bridge.”

Following the March 2010 flood damage that closed the Whipple Road Bridge, the local communities were unable to fund the necessary repairs.  MassDOT hired contractor Kodiak Construction to rebuild the bridge, with the communities jointly paying approximately $10,000 of the cost.

“It was great joining with the towns and playing a key role in bringing this project to completion. I want to thank Secretary Davey, the people at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, especially John Romano, for all of their help making this a reality,” said Representative James R. Miceli. “This bridge is vital to the transportation needs of Tewksbury, Wilmington and Billerica, and to have it completed more than a month ahead of schedule is an extra bonus.”

“I'm pleased to have worked with Reps Miceli and Adams to have this bridge reopened. Further, having this construction funded by the state certainly helped lift the financial burden off the communities. This is a great display of working together for positive results for the taxpayers,” said Representative Marc Lombardo.

“It is important to highlight the importance placed on our infrastructure by the Commonwealth and local governments,” said Andrew Deslaurier, Chairman of the Billerica Board of Selectmen. “This project completed ahead of schedule is an example of the new standard of investment needed to keep the Commonwealth moving!”

"Tewksbury thanks the DOT for completing repairs that restore a vital public safety link among three communities," said Doug Sears, Vice-Chairman of Tewksbury Board of Selectmen.

Bridge rehabilitation began in June and the bridge reopened to traffic today.
