Daytime Ramp Closures between Memorial Avenue Rotary and Route 5 North and South, Dec. 14

MassDOT will implement alternating ramp closures, as needed, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Monday, December 14, between the Memorial Avenue Rotary and Route 5 North and South. This closure is required for the contractor to perform electrical work as part of the Memorial Avenue Rotary Replacement Project.

During these events, through traffic will experience some delays and will be directed to follow detour signs around the closures. Normal operations will resume upon completion of the shifts described above.

The Memorial Bridge over the Connecticut River and Memorial Avenue will remain open to through traffic at all times. During these closures, pedestrians and bicyclists will be escorted across the ramps by a police detail.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution.

Final Phase of Construction (July through December 2015)

During the last phase of the project, through December 2015, MassDOT will perform eastbound and westbound bridge fascia work, finish the bridge decks, construct sidewalks, add barriers and railings, and install the final pavement and lane markings.

MassDOT will implement the following daytime lane closures as needed through December 2015:

  • Closures of Memorial Avenue Rotary shoulders between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM
  • Occasional single lane closures (left or right depending on the work being performed) along Route 5 north and southbound between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM

MassDOT will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on Route 5 at all times. Signage is in place to alert drivers of these lane closures. Pedestrians and cyclists will be permitted on the Memorial Avenue eastbound bridge only. Bicyclists are encouraged to walk their bikes on the sidewalks.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution.

The eastbound bridge was replaced on June 5 through June 9, 2015. The westbound bridge was replaced on July 10 through July 14, 2015.

The schedule for this major infrastructure project is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
