What's New

MassDOT will implement alternating ramp closures, as needed, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Monday, December 14, between the Memorial Avenue Rotary and Route 5 North and South. This closure is required for the contractor to perform electrical work.

For more information on closures and detour routes, refer to the Construction Updates and Traffic Management webpage.

The eastbound and westbound Memorial Avenue Rotary Bridges have been successfully replaced! During the last phase of the project, through December 2015, MassDOT will finish the bridge decks and perform final construction work. Occasional single lane closures of Route 5 north and southbound and closures of the shoulders along the Rotary will continue through the end of construction.

About The Project

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is designing and constructing improvements to two overpasses carrying Memorial Avenue over US Route 5 in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The Memorial Avenue Rotary Replacement Project includes the State Route 147 eastbound and westbound (Memorial Avenue) and US Route 5 (Riverdale Street) interchange area.

MassDOT has replaced the superstructures, or the portion of the bridge span that supports the roadway, of both bridges. Each superstructure was reconstructed over the course of single long weekends. In addition, MassDOT has rehabilitated the substructure, or the abutment and other support structures, and retaining walls. Under the Patrick Administration's Accelerated Bridge Program, this project is using innovative construction techniques to allow for safe and fast construction to minimize impacts to traffic and nearby utilities.

Traffic shifts, work hours and other details will be posted to this website. To hear about the latest project news and public meetings,

Public Outreach Program

MassDOT is committed to responsive and transparent public outreach throughout completion of the construction. The project team will provide motorists and neighbors the information they need to plan alternative travel during the final stage of construction, as needed.

In December 2014, MassDOT hosted a public meeting to share information about design and construction with community leaders, residents, businesses and other stakeholders.

In February 2015, 30 days prior to the start of construction, MassDOT hosted a construction management meeting with abutters and other stakeholders.
