What's New

MassDOT is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, April 25, at 6:00 PM at the Harvard Club (374 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston). At this meeting, the project team will discuss final construction and traffic management plans for Phase 3 when the Massachusetts Avenue bridge over the Commonwealth Avenue bypass roadways is replaced. View the meeting notice for more information.

As part of the project to replace the City of Boston's bridge that carries Massachusetts Avenue over Commonwealth Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue north and southbound will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge between the Commonwealth Avenue surface roadways from 10:00 PM on Thursday, May 10, to 5:00 AM on Tuesday, May 15. The Commonwealth Avenue bypasses under the bridge will also be closed to traffic. The closure is necessary to allow crews to replace the bridge. At the direction of the City of Boston, no parking will be allowed along the detour routes. Local access will be maintained to businesses and residences on Commonwealth Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue. Parking will be maintained on Massachusetts Avenue. View the detours map and the No Parking Flyer for more details. Bicyclists and pedestrians will use the Charlesgate East and Hereford Street crossings. MBTA bus service for Routes 1 and CT1 will also be detoured and may be delayed. View the details about bus stop relocations.

Additionally, MassDOT will close the eastbound and westbound Commonwealth Avenue bypass roadways under the bridge from Saturday, May 5, through Wednesday, May 23. The closures are necessary for the contractor to have access to the bridge substructure to prepare for and complete the full bridge replacement.

MassDOT has implemented alternating single lane closures on Massachusetts Avenue north and southbound in the vicinity of the bridge over Commonwealth Avenue. The lane closures will occur periodically, as needed, on weekdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and will continue through August 2018. The closures are necessary for the contractor to install utilities for new street lighting and traffic signals.
