I-90 Lane Reductions in Boston for Dry Run, June 1-3

From 9:00 PM on Friday, June 1, to 5:00 AM on Sunday, June 3, MassDOT will reduce I-90 (between the Allston Interchange and the Beacon Street Overpass) to two lanes in both directions. This will allow MassDOT and its contractor to conduct necessary preparation activities and a "dry run" of the I-90 traffic logistics for Stage 4 (2018 Construction Shutdown). A "crossover" will be in place on I-90 that will direct all vehicular traffic to either the eastbound or westbound roadways at different periods of time.

The I-90 Eastbound on-ramp from Cambridge Street/Soldier’s Field Road will be closed during this timeframe. The I-90 Westbound Exit 20 off-ramp to Brighton/Cambridge will be closed intermittently. See the “I-90 (Mass Pike) Ramp Closures Detour Map” below.

There will be no impacts to the MBTA Green Line, Commuter Rail, or local vehicular traffic during this weekend.

I-90 and Commonwealth Avenue Traffic Impacts during Off-Peak Hours Throughout the Spring

In order to allow crews and contractors to safely and effectively conduct operations, temporary traffic impacts including overnight and daytime off-peak lane closures on I-90 and Commonwealth Avenue will be implemented as needed throughout the spring. These types of traffic impacts were used throughout spring, summer, and fall of 2017, when the eastbound deck and transit infrastructure were replaced. Logistical setups will be utilized this spring in ways that consider the needs of the traveling public and minimize the impacts on the local community.

The full list of traffic impacts occurring in the area of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge throughout the spring is below. These impacts will occur as operations require:

  • Overnight lane closures on I-90 east and westbound from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM
  • Overnight lane closures on Commonwealth Avenue east and westbound from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM
  • Off-peak daytime lane closures on Commonwealth Avenue east and westbound from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Work being carried out by crews in advance of the intensive construction operations later this summer includes activities such as reconstruction of back walls, excavation, shielding installation, expansion joint work, utility relocation, and other preparation items. This work is in preparation for the 2018 Construction Shutdown (Stage 4). To see the full project schedule, check out the Construction page.
