Chelsea/Route 1 Viaduct

Chelsea Route1 map

Project Overview

The Chelsea Viaduct is structurally deficient and in need of repair and rehabilitation. The viaduct, first constructed in 1956-’57, carries 63,000 vehicles daily (including MBTA Route 111) on Route 1 through the Chelsea Curves to the Tobin Bridge, providing a crucial transportation link between Chelsea, the north shore, and Boston.

To ensure the safety of this critical connection, MassDOT has assembled a team to rehabilitate and restore the superstructure and roadway to a state of good repair.

Working with the City of Chelsea, abutting residents, roadway users, and other stakeholders, the team will design a plan for construction that minimizes and mitigates temporary construction impacts, and coordinates with the Tobin Bridge Rehabilitation Project (#605957). Coordination will shorten the overall period during which Chelsea experiences construction impacts.
