Berkley: Padelford Street Bridge Opens

MassDOT's Highway Division Administrator Frank DePaola this week joined state and local officials in celebrating the opening of the new Padelford Street Bridge in Berkley. The $5.65 million project used fast track "Design Build" rapid construction techniques to replace the bridge structure.

The result: a limited four week roadway closure minimizing impact to traffic and the environment.

The project replaced the existing deteriorated 1964 bridge with a two span steel beam bridge providing one travel lane in each direction along with a six and a half foot sidewalk on the north side and five foot shoulders located along both sides of the roadway to accommodate for bicycle and pedestrian travel. Final utility relocations and the resurfacing of Route 24 will be completed over the next two weeks.

Morton Street Bridge Opens Ahead of Schedule

MassDOT announced the successful opening of the new Morton Street Bridge in Mattapan more than a full day ahead of the already accelerated schedule.

The original structurally deficient bridge carrying Morton Street over the MBTA commuter rail tracks closed on Friday, August 8 for final demolition and installation of the new bridge. The new bridge opened to traffic just nine days later, at approximately 3:00am on Sunday, August 17.

MassDOT’s Highway Division used Accelerated Bridge Construction methods to minimize impact on the neighborhood and traffic. Crews assembled a new single span bridge structure adjacent to the crossing, and then rolled the structure into place using "heavy lift" equipment.

"The innovative "heavy lift" accelerated process is once again a proven success in delivering new infrastructure with only a short term disruption for motorists and commuters," said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey. "I congratulate the team for completing the work ahead of their aggressive schedule."

MassDOT also used Accelerated Bridge Construction and "heavy lift" methods in 2012 to replace the River Street Bridge crossing over the MBTA and CSX railroad tracks in Hyde Park, in addition to previous "heavy lift" bridge projects in Phillipston and Wellesley. During the work, heavy-lifting machines called Self-Propelled Modular Transporters lift the new superstructure from its supports to its final destination and lower it into position.

MassDOT Infra-Space Program Seeks Ideas

MassDOT has announced creation of the “Infra-Space” Program to identify areas under elevated roads, bridges or viaducts for possible redevelopment opportunities.

The Infra-Space program follows the successful ongoing development of a parking facility, multi-modal path, and adjustable ornamental light displays under a large elevated portion of the I-93 South East Expressway in Boston.

A Request for Information (RFI) distributed to municipalities, businesses, non-profit institutions, property owners, developers, and community and arts organizations asks for nominations and redevelopment project proposals for locations across the Commonwealth where elevated roadways, bridges, viaducts, or other transportation infrastructure are a barrier to neighborhoods, pedestrians, bicyclists, multi-modal travel, urban resources, and economic development opportunities.

"The public-private partnership to develop the area under the South East Expressway is proving to be a great success in connecting neighborhoods and providing important services and a place for artistic expression," said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey. "We are confident this innovative approach can work in other locations where a transportation barrier can be converted for a community's benefit."

The Infra-Space program asks for redevelopment ideas that would:

  • Create a gateway between neighborhoods/urban resources
  • Create better connections for multi-modal travel
  • Create an arts/event space for adjacent communities
  • Support local economic development through commercial uses/parking
  • Create recreational amenities/new open space
  • Increase safety/security through more active use and lighting

Infra-Space Nomination Forms were due this week and Project Proposal Forms proposing public-private partnerships to improve underutilized spaces are due by Wednesday, September 17. The RFI is available on the web at:

MassDOT earlier this year reached agreement with GTI Properties to provide parking in two lots under the elevated portion of the I-93 Southeast Expressway in Boston. The parking serves the public with spaces set aside for use by the Pine Street Inn. Space is also reserved for Zipcar vehicle-sharing service and bike cages for bicycles.

MassDOT constructed new sidewalks, and installed adjustable ornamental lighting which can project colored lighting and symbols on the highway viaduct overhead and the sidewalk below. The result is improved conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists passing through the site and a point of civic pride.

The second phase of the project scheduled for substantial completion early next year includes additional parking spaces, a new multi-modal path connecting the South Bay Harbor Trail to Kneeland Street, and a new, transportation-themed public space which extends the Boston Harborwalk along the Fort Point Channel.
