The John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge was built in 1951 connecting Newburyport and Amesbury over the Merrimack River. Construction of the Whittier Bridge/I-95 Improvement Project is underway and anticipated project completion is late summer 2017. Visit this site to learn about project updates and traffic and boating management plans.
The project corridor encompasses Newburyport, Amesbury, and Salisbury (from south to north) along I-95 between just north of Exit 57 (to Route 113) and the New Hampshire state border. View a map of the corridor to learn more.
Construction brings some temporary inconvenience, including lane closures, shifts and detours on interstate highways and local roads. MassDOT will provide advance notice of the project phases, changes in routes, and other information. Through traffic will be maintained on I-95 north and southbound at all times. Drivers destined for locations near the affected area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone.
