Design & Construction

Phase 1: New Busway, BRT Stations, Replacement of Washington Avenue Bridge

Construction of the Silver Line Gateway Phase 1 Project began in March 2015. It includes the new dedicated Busway, four Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Stations, and replacement of the Washington Avenue Bridge. To facilitate construction of the bridge replacement, the Washington Avenue Bridge was closed to vehicles in May 2015 and reopened to two-way traffic in September 2016.

Minor traffic detours may be required during construction of the Busway across the local roads. The Busway and BRT stations are expected to be operating by early 2018.

Phase 2: New Commuter Rail Station

Phase 2 of the Silver Line Gateway Project includes construction of a new and fully accessible Commuter Rail Station to be located adjacent to Mystic Mall and accessed from both Everett Avenue and Third Street. Design is currently at a 90% level, and will be completed in early summer 2017. Construction is expected to start as soon as funding is secured.

Phase 2 of the project also includes new traffic signals at the Busway intersections with Everett, Spruce and Arlington Streets, an updated railroad signal system, and completion of the Downtown Chelsea BRT Station.

Phase 3 which is being advanced by the City of Chelsea, includes completion of the shared-use path called the Chelsea Greenway, from Chestnut Street to Eastern Avenue.
