Safe Route To School

An on-call team of engineers, planners, and pedestrian/bicycle experts assess school environments making recommendations for possible operational and physical improvements to the roads and walkways surrounding schools. Safety enhancements may include speed reduction improvements, pedestrian and bicycle crossings, on- or off-street bicycle facilities providing school access, secure bicycle parking, and sidewalks.

Your school can partner with the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program on education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation activities to become eligible for infrastructure projects targeted to enhance safe and fully-accessible routes to school. Selected schools will represent diverse socio-economic communities, in urban/suburban/rural environments statewide, all committed to implementing ongoing Safe Routes to School initiatives. Participating communities are currently limited to one assessment per community in order to distribute the benefits of the Program throughout the Commonwealth.

Schools are invited annually to apply for an infrastructure project. Once the applications open, we will post additional information to this page.

Your school outreach coordinators are available to work with your school community to provide non-infrastructure walkability and bikability assessments to identify the safes routes using the existing infrastructure within your community.
