Route 79/Braga Bridge Improvements Project

Traffic

Construction brings some inconvenience, including detours and changes in regular travel routes. MassDOT will continuously provide advance notice of the project phases, changes in routes and other information. The end result will be a new roadway and bridges, and enhanced connections and options for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Local access to area attractions and abutting properties will be maintained at all times. All businesses are open. Motorists should follow the Battleship Cove Area signage for access to the waterfront. MassDOT encourages through traffic to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. Drivers destined for locations near the affected area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone.

The schedule for this major infrastructure project is subject to change without notice. All lane restrictions and closures and construction activities are weather dependent. As is typical with most large construction projects, work may sometimes take place without prior notice; however, MassDOT will make every effort to provide advance notice.

Rescheduled: Water Street Lane Closures for Pavement Milling, September 21

MassDOT will mill Water Street between Pond Street and Anawan Street on Wednesday, September 21, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A portion of roadway near the Gates of the City will also be milled during this timeframe. Traffic will be maintained; however, the work will require lane closures. This work is to prepare for final paving in the coming weeks.

I-195 Overnight Lane Closures for Paving Began September 12

MassDOT is implementing a series of alternating lane closures on I-195 East and West at both ends of the Braga Bridge. The overnight closures will take place Monday through Friday from 7:00 PM each night to 6:00 AM the following morning, and will continue for about three weeks. One travel lane will be maintained in each direction at all times. The closures will allow the contractor to mill, pave, and stripe the highway connections to the Braga Bridge.

Drivers who must travel through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone. MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

New Route 79 Southbound Roadway Now Open
Temporary Off-Ramp to South Davol Street Closed

MassDOT is pleased to announce that it has reached another milestone with the opening of the new Route 79 southbound roadway. The temporary off-ramp from Route 79 South to South Davol Street has been closed. Southbound traffic from Davol Street will continue to use South Davol Street between the U-turn and Central Street. This is the final configuration of these roadways.

New Route 79 Northbound Roadway Now Open North of Central Street

The new Route 79 northbound roadway is now open north of Central Street. Southbound traffic on Davol Street will continue to use South Davol Street between the U-turn and Central Street. This section of Davol Street was previously open to two-way traffic during construction and will now only carry southbound traffic.
