Gold Star Family Plate

Eligibility

A Gold Star Family plate can be issued, without charge, to spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren of soldiers who died while on active duty with the Armed Forces of the United States. Each qualifying applicant can register one private passenger motor vehicle or motorcycle owned and principally used by him/her.

Step-parents, step-children, step-siblings, step-grandparents, and step-grandchildren are not eligible unless a legal adoption occurred prior to the time of death.

Gold Star Family Plate

Procedure to Obtain Gold Star Family Plates:

An Application for Gold Star Family Plates must be completed. Along with this completed application, you must submit either an original or a certified copy of one of the following documents to the Special Plates Department of the RMV:

  • A DD Form 1300 Report of Casualty, or a telegram for World War II and Korean military members
Mail the completed Application for Gold Star Family Plates and verification listed above to:

Registry of Motor Vehicles
Attn: Special Plates
PO Box 55895
Boston, MA 02205-5895

Once eligibility is verified, customers will receive their veteran license plates and registration via U.S. Mail.

Gold Star Family plates are also issued at any full service RMV office by presenting the above listed documents.

Fees:

There is no fee for the issuance or the renewal of the Gold Star Family plates.

Renewal Cycle:

These plates must be renewed every two (2) years.
