MassDOT Adds Web Tool for RMV Customers to Contribute to Organ and Tissue Donor Registration Fund
(Boston- Wednesday, December 15, 2010) - MassDOT Registrar Rachel Kaprielian today announced that RMV internet customers will now be able to contribute to a new Organ and Tissue Donor Registration Fund when they renew or request a duplicate of their license and Mass ID online.
The Fund, created by legislation signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick earlier this year, is designed to help increase donor registration rates and build greater awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation. The Fund will be administered by a nine-member Advisory Council that will coordinate organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Massachusetts and develop strategies to increase registrations and contributions to the Fund.
"We are excited to be able to give our customers another choice in supporting organ and tissue donations which last year saved 130 lives in Massachusetts," said Registrar Kaprielian. "By simply checking-off a box on their license and Mass ID applications, our customers can now direct a $2.00 contribution to the fund."
Even though more than 2.2 million RMV customers are enrolled donors, Massachusetts lags behind a number of other states where more than half of the driving population is registered as organ and tissue donors.
Richard S. Luskin, President and CEO of New England Organ Bank said, "We applaud Registrar Kaprielian and the RMV for implementing the Massachusetts Organ and Tissue Registration Fund passed by the legislature earlier this year. The RMV plays an important role in helping to register organ and tissue donors, in fact, 99% of all people in the state who register to be a donor do so through the RMV. This fund will raise awareness of how registering as a donor can save lives."
There are currently 110,000 people nationally and 2,945 in Massachusetts waiting for a life saving organ transplant, and one new name is added to that waiting list every 11 minutes.
Over the last two years, MassDOT RMV launched online organ and tissue enrollment as one of 18 new internet transactions available at www.massrmv.com.
