Automobile Insurance Changes
In Massachusetts, you are required to have automobile insurance to register a vehicle or renew a vehicle registration. Insurance coverage is confirmed by the presence of an insurance stamp, dates of policy coverage, and the signature of your insurance company’s agent or representative on one of the following forms:
- Registry of Motor Vehicles Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1 form)
- Registry of Motor Vehicles Application for Registration Renewal (RMV-2 form)
- Registry of Motor Vehicles Application for Registration Amendment/Renewal (RMV-3 form)
An insurance stamp or signature should be recorded in the Insurance Verification section of these forms.
The new competitive insurance changes in Massachusetts may cause you to decide to buy automobile insurance from a different insurance company. If you decide to change your insurance company, you must notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles of this change. Since your vehicle Registration Certificate also serves as proof of vehicle insurance in Massachusetts, you are required to have the correct insurance company listed on your Registration Certificate. This transaction is very easy. Ask your insurance agent or representative to complete an Application for Registration Amendment (RMV-3 form) listing your new insurance company and present this form and a $15.00 fee at any RMV branch office. The RMV will amend your insurance information and you will receive an updated Registration Certificate. The RMV-3 form can be found in the Forms and Publications section of our website under Registration.
