Registry Branches to Cut Back on Credit Card Acceptance

Effective November 26, 2001 the Registry of Motor Vehicles will no longer accept credit card payments for registration, citation and suspension reinstatement transactions at any of the branch locations. New and duplicate licenses may still be paid with a credit card.

"In an effort to meet budget constraints, the Registry like many other state agencies, has had to make changes in the way we do business," said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Dan Grabauskas. "We hope this change in policy is a minor inconvenience and that customers take advantage of our convenient online and telephone options."

This change in policy will only affect the branch locations. The Registry reminds customers who want to use a credit card to renew their automobile registration, pay a citation or reinstate their license following a suspension that there are several alternatives to visiting a branch:

For Automobile Registration Renewals and Duplicates:

  • Via the Internet at massrmv.com.
  • 1-866-MASS-RMV our new toll-free automated telephone renewal hotline.
  • The RMV Telephone Center at (617) 351-4500 (339/617/781/857)
or 800-858-3926 (from all other MA area codes).

Citation Payments:

  • Can be made via the Internet or by calling the Telephone Center.

License Suspension Reinstatements:

  • Telephone Center Only
