Study Process

Looking at Now and the Future

The Study will focus on understanding what today's travel needs are and what types of transit service would help support the study area's future. That effort will involve analyzing MBTA system performance, existing and forecasted population and employment characteristics, and current and projected land use and development. With your active participation the Study will identify and evaluate an array of strategies to improve the quality and overall reliability of the transit system in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan.

Creative Community Thinking

The only preconceived notion MassDOT brings to the Study is the need to identify strategies that will improve transit service for Study Area communities. Nothing is out of bounds as the Study is designed to evaluate ideas both small (such as minor modifications to bus routes) and large (such as major capital investments in new transit lines). There will be many opportunities for you to participate in the process - by taking the RDM Transit Survey, participating at public meetings, and by leaving comments via the website. We hope to hear from you!

Implementation

Some recommended strategies will be easier than others to implement. Minor modifications to existing service that come at low cost may be implemented during the course of the Study. Capital-intensive ideas like the extension of new transit lines into the Study Area will require sustained advocacy and continued partnership between MassDOT and stakeholders beyond the life of the Study. A Final Report will be prepared which will also advance up to three community-supported strategies into concept plans that begin to look in greater detail into these strategies' costs, opportunities and constraints. The report will feature a "roadmap for implementation" which will identify potential approaches to identifying and securing the funding necessary to make these community-supported strategies a reality.
