Description

These maps depict roadways color-coded according to their Federal functional classification (arterial, collector, local). Federal Highway Administration developed this functional classification system as part of the Highway Performance Monitoring System.

The Federal functional classification divides roadways into the same three general categories as Planning’s Functional Classification system. The main difference between the systems is that the Federal system separates the Interstates and local roadways into urban and rural designations and classifies limited access arterials (non-Interstates) separate from full-access arterials.
