MassDOT to Motorists: ‘E-ZPASS ONLY’ AND ‘CASH ONLY’ TO REPLACE ‘ALL VEHICLES’ TOLL COLLECTION LANES ON TOBIN
Change to improve safety, traffic flow, and to mirror other toll lane configurations in Massachusetts

BOSTON (Wednesday, October 17, 2012) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) today announced the ‘ALL VEHICLES’ toll collection lane configuration on the Tobin Bridge will be replaced with ‘E-ZPASS ONLY’ and ‘CASH ONLY’ lanes as of Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 10pm.
This change will allow E-ZPass customers to move through the plaza unimpeded as cash customers are directed to dedicated cash lanes. Sixty-three percent of motorists crossing the Tobin rely on transponders to pay their toll.
“Customers on the Massachusetts Turnpike and at the Airport Tunnels are accustomed to the separate ‘E-ZPASS’ and ‘CASH ONLY’ lanes,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “Tobin commuters will now know what to expect from the drivers in front of them. Predictability will improve safety.”
This change also brings some increased operational flexibility. The lanes designated as ‘E-ZPASS ONLY’ and ‘CASH ONLY’ will be variable to allow MassDOT to better accommodate heavy traffic, emergency incidents or construction on the Tobin. A $44.8 million bridge preservation project is currently underway on the Tobin.
This toll collection change is part of the $1.2 million transition from the FastLane to E-ZPass electronic toll collection brand across Massachusetts. Signage has been replaced to reflect the change and the contractor is currently updating the pavement markings at toll plazas from West Stockbridge to Boston.
