MassDOT Highlights Women in Construction

In conjunction with National Women’s History Month and Women in Construction Week, MassDOT celebrates its own team of women in the industry. From top management to laborer, women are embedded in MassDOT’s construction work every day.

According to OSHA, the number of women working in the United States construction industry increased by 81.3% from 1985 to 2007.

The National Association of Women in Construction honors Women in Construction from March 6 through 12. MassDOT is proud to continue the tradition of recognizing the achievements of these women who break ground and serve Massachusetts communities.

Fiscal and Management Control Board Approves MBTA Fare Changes

The MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board approved several fare changes that will take effect July 1, including decreasing by ten cents the price paid by those who pay with cash for a single bus ride, expanding the free transfer program so that the MBTA transfer policy will allow transfer from bus to rail to bus, setting a student pass rate of $30-per-month and allowing use of the pass by students 12 months out of the year, and postponing consideration of any future fare increases for two-and-a-half years. The overall system-wide average increase is approximately 9.3 percent.

The board also established a "lock-box" to guarantee that any revenue from the increase can only be used to improve service.

The board took into consideration public comments gathered during a series of community meetings held throughout the state, emails and phone messages.

Members acted to address concerns expressed during that process.

The measure includes:

  • A single cash price to ride a bus decreases by ten cents
  • Expands free transfers for MBTA riders, allowing free transfers from bus to rail to bus
  • Student Pass at $30 (12 months), senior pass at $30
  • Bus Pass at $55
  • Outer Express Bus at existing prices
  • Bus fares: Cash/Ticket $2.00, Charliecard $1.70
  • The RIDE at 5 percent, instead of 10 percent increase
  • Bulk discount for schools purchasing more than 1,000 passes a month
  • Pilot student pass on fare vending machines
  • Review of Commuter Rail zones
  • Steps to address fare evasion and enforcement
  • Free transfer extended to bus-rail-bus trips

Green Line Extension Project Public Meetings Update

MassDOT and the MBTA have updated the Green Line Extension public meetings' locations and times for meetings scheduled in Cambridge, Somerville and Medford over the next two months.

As part of a current re-evaluation of the extension, the public is invited to share their ideas about the project.

The GLX project is proposed to extend the MBTA Green Line from a relocated Lechmere Station in East Cambridge to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford. The re-evaluation of the project was launched due to significant cost overruns, and the re-evaluation is expected to be completed and submitted to the T’s Fiscal & Management Control Board in May.

The following is the updated schedule of public meetings:

MassDOT and the MBTA are currently working through a re-evaluation of the Green Line Extension project, focusing on four key areas:

  • Project Management
  • Redesign
  • Re-procurement
  • Development of a reliable cost estimate and schedule

Review goals include revising the project schedule and design elements, with reduced capital and overall costs, and new procurement method recommendations. Physical elements of the project under reconsideration include reduced station designs, redesign of vehicle maintenance facility, reconsidering community path options, construction work hour limitations, power signals and retaining and sound walls.

Cancelling the project must remain an option until an affordable, feasible alternative has been identified. Any decision to cancel the project must take into consideration the potential legal exposure to the Commonwealth and costs that have already been sunk into the project.

Springfield: Demolition of I-91 Viaduct Begins

Springfield area drivers may have noticed some new equipment and activity in the closed inner lanes on the I-91 Viaduct. Major construction on the I-91 Viaduct in Springfield began this past fall and MassDOT closed the lanes on each side of the median between I-91 North and South in December 2015. Now MassDOT has achieved another major milestone: demolition of the viaduct’s reinforced concrete deck has begun.

MassDOT's contractor, the Joint Venture of White-Schiavone, will use a hoe-ram to break up concrete and remove it piece by piece from the I-91 Northbound work zone. The contractor will also saw cut steel reinforcement bars within the concrete deck. The contractor will be working two shifts (7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and 4:00 PM to midnight) on Mondays through Fridays, to ensure demolition is completed according to schedule.

You may have noticed some of the tools and techniques being used to reduce and mitigate for noise resulting from the demolition. Noise control curtains are produced locally by Sound Seal in Agawam, MA. They are composed of quilted fiberglass sound absorbers mounted to reinforced vinyl noise barriers. The curtains line 625 feet of the northbound side of I-91 in noise sensitive areas between Pynchon Street and Bridge Street. The contractor has also retrofitted on-site equipment with special back-up alarms. These alarms limit the sound to a set level above the current background noise to limit the impact of the alarms while protecting the workers on site.

MassDOT has also mounted screens on the chain-link fences that top the concrete barriers. The screens have several uses: they limit visibility into the work area, which may be distracting to passing motorists, and they block dust and objects from entering the roadway and protect the work area. The visibility screens are also in place where the noise control curtains are installed, which makes the locations of the noise control curtains difficult to see from the open travel lanes.
