Interstate 91 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project

About This Project

The I-91 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project is replacing the existing deck of the I-91 viaduct, an elevated structure in Springfield, Massachusetts. The project is progressing on an accelerated schedule to minimize traffic impacts and reduce construction duration. Once completed, the I-91 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project will increase safety and accessibility on this busy interstate, reduce annual maintenance costs, and ensure long-term service. MassDOT signed a $148 million contract with the Joint Venture of White-Schiavone (JV) in May 2015. The project will receive 80% of its funding from the Federal Highway Administration and 20% from the Commonwealth.

On November 27, 2016, MassDOT began Stage 2 of construction for the I-91 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project. During Stage 2, I-91 traffic is using the center, newly reconstructed lanes on the viaduct. Traffic on I-91 North shifted in November and traffic on I-91 South shifted in December. Construction is now taking place on the low-speed travel lane and shoulder portions of the viaduct, along with the I-91 northbound on-ramp to I-291 East.

MassDOT and the contractor are continually monitoring and collecting traffic data along various roadways within the project's impact area. The team is making adjustments to traffic signals, intersections, lane markings, and other infrastructure on I-91 and local roads, as needed.

MassDOT provides regular updates on traffic changes. For more information, review the project overview, browse project documents, and learn more about the construction plans.

Traffic Management

In December 2015, MassDOT implemented a series of lane and ramp closures to begin major rehabilitation of the I-91 Viaduct in Springfield. Generally, the number of lanes on I-91 has been reduced by one in each direction; two travel lanes will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project south of the I-291 Interchange. Drivers should allow extra time for travel in and around the Springfield area. For additional details, review the Traffic Management page.

What's New

MassDOT will implement the following overnight closures for overhead sign, barrier, and pavement line striping work:

  • I-91 North (at Exit 3): Monday, October 23, Wednesday, October 25, and Thursday, October 26
  • Exit 1A from I-291 West (to I-91 South): Monday, October 23, and Tuesday, October 24
  • I-91 South (at Temporary Exit 7-6): Tuesday, October 24
