Upcoming Day-time closures of Casey Overpass/ Route 203 in Forest Hills/ Jamaica Plain

The Casey Overpass, which carries Route 203/Arborway over Washington and New Washington streets in Forest Hills, will be closed for two consecutive days on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

MassDOT needs to perform emergency repairs to the driving surface of the road to ensure the bridge can remain open during snow and ice events.

In total, there are 17 deck spans that need to be repaired.

MassDOT anticipates needing to close the bridge for the same duration for up to three additional weekends to complete the work.

This work is weather dependent and must be done during dry weather in order for the asphalt to properly set.

During the closures, MassDOT is intending to remove the existing driving surface with jackhammers.  As a result, there will be noise associated with this work.  The end result will be an improved riding surface.

These deck repairs are only an interim measure.  A replacement project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2014, which will result in the removal of the structurally deficient bridge and a reconfiguration of this area at grade.  Built in 1951, the overpass is in an advanced stage of deterioration and is approaching the end of its serviceable life.

During the closures, the following detour will be in place:

For vehicles traveling in the southbound direction (toward the Shattuck Hospital): exit the Arborway at the offramp before the bridge; turn left and then right on to New Washington Street; turn right on Washington Street and left on to the Arborway Surface Road to Shea Circle/Forest Hills Rotary.

For vehicles traveling in the northbound direction (toward Jamaica Pond/Jamaicaway): exit Shea Circle/Forest Hills Rotary at the exit immediately following Forest Hills Street; continue on through New Washington Street; take the onramp at the intersection of New Washington and South streets to access the Arborway/Route 203.

MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes, if possible, to avoid delays.  Drivers that must travel through the affected area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone and along the detour route.
