Toll Plaza Demolition Project

Bi-Weekly Look Ahead - March 20th to March 31st

Work at all 23 work locations is trending on or ahead of schedule. Each contract has its own unique traffic management and construction management plan.

Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

DISTRICT 1

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, J.H. Maxymillian Inc., MassDOT’s contractor for the District 1 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed in two shifts, from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM.

At Plaza 1 in West Stockbridge, new drainage will be installed along Ramp A, which connects Route 41 to the Turnpike eastbound, and along the eastbound mainline. In addition, the installation of new light pole foundations and pole boxes will take place throughout the site. This work will take place throughout the look-ahead period during both day and night shifts. From Monday March 20 to Tuesday March 28, crews will construct a modified rock slope along the eastbound mainline and from Monday March 27 to Friday March 3, will perform full depth roadway construction, both taking place during day and night shifts.

The installation of conduit for new light poles and pole boxes will take place during the daytime shift throughout this look ahead. In addition, the removal of light poles and foundations will take place from Thursday March 23 through Tuesday March 28, earth excavation, grubbing and borrow placement will take place at the shoulders Monday March 20 and Tuesday March 21 and the removal and discarding of the westbound guardrail will take place from Wednesday March 22 to Friday March 24, all performed during the daytime shift.

No work will take place at Plaza 2 in Lee.

DISTRICT 2

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Middlesex Corporation, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 2 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM.

At Plaza 3 in Westfield, drainage installs, the installation of lighting conduit and box widening along the ramp connecting I-90 to Southampton Rd, will take place from Monday March 20 to Friday March 24. Roadbox excavation and construction will take place along the ramp from Southampton Rd to I-90, from Monday March 27 to Friday March 31and mast arm foundation installation will take place Monday March 27 and Tuesday March 28.

At Plaza 4 in West Springfield, lighting conduit installation will take place throughout the period covered by this look-ahead and drainage installation will take place from Wednesday March 29 to Friday March 31.

At Plaza 5 in Chicopee, lighting cabinet bases will be installed Monday March 20 and Tuesday March 21.

At Plaza 6 in Chicopee, lighting cabinet bases will be installed Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23.

At Plaza 7 in Ludlow, lighting cabinet bases will be installed Friday March 24 and Monday March 27.

At Plaza 8 in Palmer, lighting cabinet bases will be installed Tuesday March 28 and Wednesday March 29.

DISTRICT 3

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Skanska/McCourt, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 3 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM.

At Plaza 9 in Sturbridge, drainage work will take place throughout the period covered by this look-ahead. The refeeding of roadway lighting will take place Monday March 20, the abandonment of the former toll building well will take place Monday March 20 and Tuesday March 21, and eradication or former lane markings and new striping will take place along the Route 20 on-ramp Monday March 27 and Tuesday March 28.

At Plaza 10 in Auburn, drainage work will take place from Monday March 20 through Friday March 24, electrical ductbank work will take place from Monday March 27 to Friday March 31, building demolition will take place from Monday March 20 to Wednesday March 29 and removal of the underground storage tank will take place Thursday March 30 and Friday March 31.

At Plaza 10A in Millbury, median removal and temporary paving will take place from Monday March 20 to Friday March 24, the set up of a temporary work zone barrier will take place Monday March 27 and Tuesday March 28 and drainage work will take place from Wednesday March 29 to Friday March 31.

At Plaza 11 in Millbury, the widening of Ramp D, which connects I-90 Westbound to Route 122, will continue throughout the period covered by this look-ahead. Septic tank removal will take place Thursday March 23 and Friday March 24.

At Plaza 11A in Hopkinton, cut off to the sewer and water system will take place Monday March 20 and Tuesday March 21, electrical ductbank work will take place Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23, roadway lighting and building electrical work will take place Friday March 24 and drainage work will take place from Friday March 24 through Friday March 31.

At Plaza 12 in Framingham, median removal and temporary paving of ramps C and H, which connect I-90 Westbound to Route 9 and Route 9 Westbound to I-90 respectively, will take place throughout the period covered by this look-ahead.

At Plaza 13 in Framingham, ramp widening will take place throughout the period covered by this look-ahead.

DISTRICT 6

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, DW White Construction and SPS New England, MassDOT’s contractors for the District 6 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. DW White will continue their work at the Weston Toll Plazas. SPS New England will continue their work at the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel Toll Plazas. The majority of work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. Certain work at both the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel locations will require the use of night times shifts. At Allston-Brighton, this will last from Tuesday March 21 to Friday March 24 and at Ted Williams Tunnel will take place in the early hours of Tuesday March 28.

Weston

At the Weston Toll Plazas, DW White will continue construction on Ramp R, connecting I-90 westbound and Route 128. This includes excavation work and the processing of demolition spoils that will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Rebar installation along the bridge abutments will occur from Wednesday March 22 to Tuesday March 28 and the forming and pouring of bridge abutments will take place from Wednesday March 29 to Friday March 31.

Along the I-90 mainline, rebar installation and the forming and pouring of retaining wall will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Electrical ductbank relocation will take place from Tuesday March 21 to Thursday March 23. Rebar installation and the forming and pouring of pier protection will take place at the bridge for Ramp G, which connects Route 128 to I-90 eastbound, and along the Park Road Bridge from Monday March 20 to Friday March 24. Crash attenuator installation and striping changes will take place in the westbound direction Tuesday March 21 and Wednesday March 22. Barrier relocation will take place in the westbound direction Thursday March 23 and Friday March 24. Striping work at the eastern end of the mainline will take place Tuesday March 21 and barrier relocation will take place at the same location on Wednesday March 22.

At Ramp J, which connects I-90 Eastbound to Route 128 and Ramp L, which connects I-90 Route 128 to I-90 westbound, concrete repairs at the Park Road Bridge will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Ramp J barrier installation will take place Monday March 20 and Tuesday March 21, Ramp L barrier installation will take place Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23 and pier protection and rebar installation at the Park Road Bridge will take place from Tuesday March 21 to Friday March 31.

Allston-Brighton

At Allston-Brighton, SPS New England will continue work at Plaza 18 Eastbound, Plaza 19 Eastbound and Westbound and Plaza 20. Plaza 18 connects I-90 Eastbound traffic to Cambridge Street and Cambridge Street traffic bound for I-90 West. Plaza 19 serves the I-90 mainline. Plaza 20 connects I-90 Westbound traffic to Cambridge Street and Cambridge Street traffic bound for I-90 East.

At Plaza 18 Eastbound, the installation of retaining wall soldier piles will take place from Monday March 27 to Friday March 31.

At Plaza 19 Westbound, the excavation of contaminated soil and preparation of the sub grade roadway layer will take place from Monday March 20 to Friday March 24. The installation of electrical conduit will take place from Monday March 20 to Wednesday March 22. The installation of drainage structures will take place Thursday March 23 and Friday March 24. The installation of a westbound electrical crossing will take place Monday March 27 and Tuesday March 28 and the installation of a sub drain will take place from Monday March 27 to Friday March 31.

At Plaza 20, the installation of drainage structures will take place Thursday March 23 and Friday March 24 and the preparation of the sub-grade roadway layer will take place Monday March 27 to Friday March 31.

Night work will be required during this time period to accommodate shifts in traffic. This includes the installation of pavement markings during the early hours of Tuesday March 21 and Wednesday March 22 and the installation of a temporary barrier in the westbound mainline direction during the early hours from Wednesday March 22 to Friday March 24.

On the mainline, the excavation of the westbound median in preparation for construction of the Stage 2A roadway alignment will take place from Monday March 27 to Friday March 31.

Ted Williams Tunnel

At the Ted Williams Tunnel, SPS New England will perform work at both Plaza 31, connecting Route 1A to I-90 and at Plaza 37, connecting Harborside Drive and the Airport to I-90.

At Plaza 31, night time work will be required to accommodate the project’s Stage 3 traffic pattern. This includes placing temporary roadway striping, the installation of safety drums, signage, temporary crash attenuators and temporary barriers. This work will take place during the early hours of Tuesday March 28 and will require the closure of a travel lane, but no detour.

At Plaza 37, work will take place to remove the existing sidewalk leading up to the toll plaza support building on Thursday March 30, followed by work to reset the granite curb at that location on Friday March 31.
