Toll Plaza Demolition Project

Bi-Weekly Look Ahead - May 15 to May 26

Work at all 23 work locations is trending on or ahead of schedule. Each contract has its own unique traffic management and construction management plan.

Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

DISTRICT 1

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, J.H. Maxymillian Inc., MassDOT’s contractor for the District 1 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed in three shifts, around the clock, from Monday through Friday. In addition, some work at Plaza 1 will take place on Saturday, May 20. All work is progressing on or ahead of schedule. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 1 in West Stockbridge, drainage work and the installation of fiber optics cable in the median along with Phase 4 excavation along Ramp A, connecting Route 41 to I-90 Eastbound, and rock cut along Ramp E, connecting I-90 Westbound to Route 41, will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Installation of a dense grade of crushed stone for the subbase will take place from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, paving of ramps A, E and M, will take place Tuesday, May 16, Wednesday, May 17 and Friday, May 19, and paving of the westbound mainline will take place Wednesday, May 17 through Friday, May 19.

Installation of CCTV foundation will take place Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18, along with the installation of temporary fiber optics cable Wednesday, May 17 through Friday, May 19. Guardrail installation, along with construction of berm and edging will take place Friday, May 19, Saturday, May 20, Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23. Installation of site lighting in the eastbound direction and removal and resetting of work barriers will take place between Wednesday, May 24 and Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 2 in Lee, drainage installation, full depth roadway construction, paving of the various ramps and installation of site lighting will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead.

DISTRICT 2

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Middlesex Corporation, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 2 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work at all locations within District 2 is trending on or ahead of schedule. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 3 in Westfield, full depth construction of the Stage 4 area will conclude on Monday, May 15, fine grading will take place on Tuesday, May 16 and paving will take place Tuesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 17. Reconfiguration of traffic into Stage 5 will take place Thursday, May 18 and full depth construction will take place Friday, May 19 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 4 in West Springfield, roadbox excavation and construction of Stage 4A will take place from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, installation of pier protection barrier will take place Monday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 24, temporary paving will take place Tuesday, May 16, fine grading of the Stage 4A area will take place Monday, May 22 and paving will take place from Tuesday, May 23 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 5 in Chicopee, roadbox installation and construction of Stage 3 will take place Monday, May 15, drainage installation will take place Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16, fine grading of the Stage 3 area will take place Tuesday, May 16 and paving will take place Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18. Reconfiguration of traffic into Stage 4 will take place Friday, May 19, with continued roadbox excavation and construction from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

No work will take place at Plaza 6 in Chicopee.

At Plaza 7 in Ludlow, the installation of lighting conduit will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 8 in Palmer, backfill of the former toll building foundation will take place Monday, May 22 and installation of lighting conduit will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

DISTRICT 3

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Skanska/McCourt, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 3 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work at all locations within District 3 is progressing on or ahead of schedule. Work will be performed project-wide predominately during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. Ramp milling at Plazas 9, 10 10A, 11 and 11A will require brief overnight work for two nights at each plaza. More details are available below. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 9 in Sturbridge, drainage installation and gore area work will take place between Monday, May 15 and Friday, May 19. Ramp milling will take place during the overnight hours of Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16. Removal and resetting of the gore area barrier will take place Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23, additional barrier resetting will take place between Monday, May 22 and Friday, May 26 to accommodate the installation of revised drainage. Line eradication will take place Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 10 in Auburn, gore area construction will take place from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 22, removal and resetting of the barrier along Ramp F, connecting Route 12 to I-90 Westbound, will take place Monday, May 15 with subsequent construction taking place from Tuesday, May 16 to Friday, May 19. Ramp milling will take place during the overnight hours Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18, full depth median construction along with ramp construction on Ramp E, connecting I-90 to Route 12 Westbound, will take place Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26. Paving along Ramp F will take place Monday, May 22, followed by curbing on Tuesday, May 22, millings under the guardrail on Wednesday, May 23 and work on the guardrail itself on Thursday, May 25.

At Plaza 10A in Millbury, drainage work will take place from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, ramp milling will take place during the overnight hours of Friday, May 19 and Monday, May 22 and underground electrical work will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 11 in Millbury, furnishing and installation of the guardrail will take place Monday, May 15, removal and resetting of the temporary barrier will take place Tuesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 17, full depth paving and signage work will take place Thursday, May 18 and striping and further resetting of the temporary work barrier will take place Friday, May 19. Traffic island removal will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26 and ramp drainage work will take place during the overnight hours of Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 24. Drainage work and detention basin construction will take place at the Plaza 11 Park and Ride throughout the period covered in this look-ahead.

At Plaza 11A in Hopkinton, signage installation will occur Monday, May 15, striping, traffic switch work and backfilling of the former toll building site will take place Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16, and drainage work will take place from Wednesday, May 17 through Friday, May 26. In addition, ramp milling will take place during the overnight hours of Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 12 in Framingham, full depth construction will take place Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, underground electrical work will take place Monday, May 22 to Wednesday, May 24 and modification of the rock slope will take place Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26. Overhead signage removal will take place under a separate contract on Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 13 in Framingham, slope work will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Full depth reconstruction will take place Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, drainage work will take place Monday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 17 and underground electrical work will take place Tuesday, May 23 to Thursday, May 25.

DISTRICT 6

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, DW White Construction, SPS New England and S&R Corporation, MassDOT’s contractors for the District 6 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. DW White will continue their work at the Weston Toll Plazas, SPS New England will continue their work at the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel Toll Plazas and S&R Corporation will continue work on demolition at the Sumner Tunnel Toll Plaza. Work at all locations is progressing on or ahead of schedule and set to be completed at the same time in November of 2017.

The majority of work at Weston, Allston-Brighton, Ted Williams Tunnel and the Sumner Tunnel will be performed during standard working hours. For Weston, this is between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, Allston-Brighton, between 6:00 am and 4:30 pm and for the Ted Williams Tunnel and Sumner Tunnel, between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm. However, certain work at the Allston-Brighton interchange will require the use of nighttime work between 8:30 pm and 5:00 am and weekend shifts, including Sunday, May 21 and Sunday, May 28. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

Weston

At the Weston Toll Plazas, DW White will continue construction on Ramp R, connecting I-90 Westbound and Route 128. This includes the processing of demolition spoils and full excavation, to take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Preparation of slab installation will take place Monday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 17, with forming of slab taking place Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19 and forming and pouring of bridge protection barrier will take place between Monday, May 22 and Friday, May 26.

Along the I-90 mainline, removal and resetting of the eastbound and westbound barriers, installation of the median barrier, electrical ductbank installation and full depth roadway box construction will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Pier protection and rebar installation on the westbound shoulder of both the Park Road Bridge and Ramp G Bridge will take place between Monday, May 15 and Friday, May 19 and similar work will take place on the Ramp J westbound shoulder between Wednesday, May 24 and Friday, May 26. Drainage work will take place between Monday, May 15 and Thursday, May 25, including work on Sunday, May 21 and milling work will take place between Sunday, May 21 and Thursday, May 25.

At Ramp J, which connects I-90 Eastbound to Route 128, and Ramp L, which connects Route 128 to I-90 Westbound, forming and pouring of bridge protection will take place along the Ramp G Bridge and the removal and resetting of the temporary barrier along Ramp L will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Drainage installation, electrical duct bank installation and rebar installation along the Ramp G Bridge will take place between Monday, May 15 and Friday, May 19. Concrete repairs will take place along the Ramp G Bridge between Tuesday, May 16 and Monday, May 22, forming and pouring of pier protection along the Park Road Bridge will take place from Wednesday, May 17 through Friday, May 26 and granite edging installation will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

Allston-Brighton

At Allston-Brighton, SPS New England will continue work at Plaza 18 Eastbound and Westbound, Plaza 19 Eastbound and Westbound, and Plaza 20. Plaza 18 connects I-90 Eastbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Westbound. Plaza 19 serves the I-90 mainline. Plaza 20 connects I-90 Westbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Eastbound.

At Plaza 18 Eastbound, installation of millings and guardrail will take place along Ramp B Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18. Paving of the second intermediate course will take place Monday, May 22.

At Plaza 18 Westbound, installation of millings and guardrail will take place on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18.

At Plaza 19 Eastbound, removal of the temporary barrier will take place Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16, excavation of asphalt will take place Wednesday, May 17 to Friday, May 19 and installation of drainage and electrical wiring will take place from Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 19 Westbound, installation of millings and guardrail will take place Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19 and installation of bridge protection barrier will take place Monday, May 22 to Friday, May 26.

At Plaza 20, installation of bridge protection barrier will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead and installation of overhead sign foundation will take place Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16.

Excavation of the westbound median along the I-90 mainline will occur throughout the period covered in this look-ahead, including work on Sunday, May 21 and again on Sunday, May 28. Stage 2A support of excavation work will take place from Sunday, May 21 to Sunday, May 28, not including Saturday, May 27.

Ted Williams Tunnel

At the Ted Williams Tunnel, SPS New England will perform work at Plaza 37, connecting Route 1A to I-90. No work will take place at Plaza 31, connecting Harborside Drive and the Airport to I-90, during this time period.

At Plaza 37, the installation of granite edging along with the forming and pouring of a concrete strip will take place Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16 and the installation of guardrail will take place Wednesday, May 17 through Friday, May 19. The pouring of concrete island will take place Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23.

Sumner Tunnel Entrance

At the Sumner Tunnel Entrance, installation of drainage structures will take place from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19, set up of a pedestrian guidance system will take place from Thursday, May to Friday, May 19, necessitating the use of a police detail. On Monday, May 22, lasting until Friday, May 26, work will commence on the excavation and installation of traffic signal equipment that will pair with the Boston Transportation Department’s (BTD) equipment currently undergoing installation in East Boston’s Central Square. From Monday, May 22 to Wednesday, May 24 demolition will commence on the existing sidewalk and curb on Visconti Road.
