Toll Plaza Demolition Project

Bi-Weekly Look Ahead - April 1 to April 14

Work at all 23 work locations is trending on or ahead of schedule. Each contract has its own unique traffic management and construction management plan.

Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

DISTRICT 1

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, J.H. Maxymillian Inc., MassDOT’s contractor for the District 1 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed in two shifts, from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM.

At Plaza 1 in West Stockbridge, new drainage will be installed along Ramp A, which connects Route 41 to I-90 Eastbound, and along the eastbound mainline on Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4. In the westbound direction along the I-90 mainline and Ramp E, which connects I-90 West to Route 4, drainage installations will take place from Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 14, along with rock excavation on Ramp E from Monday, April 3 to Wednesday, April 12. Subdrain will be installed along I-90 Eastbound and in the median from Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 14. Installation of conduit for new light poles, pole boxes and pole foundations will take place Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14. Construction of a modified rock slope along the eastbound mainline will take place from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12.

Full depth roadway excavation in both directions will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead, along with earth excavation and demolition of the former truck turnout median from Monday, April 3 to Wednesday, April 5 and again from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12.

Installation of light-pole foundations; drainage; modification of rock slope; full-depth excavation; and Class A rock excavation, will be performed during both day- and night-shifts.

No work will take place at Plaza 2 in Lee.

DISTRICT 2

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Middlesex Corporation, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 2 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM.

At Plaza 3 in Westfield, lighting conduit installation will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7, along with the placement of lighting cabinet bases on Monday, April 3. Roadway box widening will take place along the ramp connecting I-90 to Southampton Road from Monday, April 3 to Wednesday, April 5, along with roadway box excavation along the opposing ramp connecting Southampton Road to I-90 from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. Mast arm foundation installation will take place Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6.

Removal of the median and paving in preparation to shift traffic is scheduled to take place Friday April 7 and Monday April 10; this work is dependent on the availability of materials from operating asphalt plants. Preparation for paving in anticipation of Stage 3 traffic conditions, through the location of the former utility building, will take place from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12; preparation for paving along the adjacent on-ramp will take place Thursday April, 13 and Friday April, 14.

At Plaza 4 in West Springfield, installation of lighting conduit will continue from Monday, April 3 to Tuesday, April 11, and lighting cabinet base installation will take place Friday, April 7 and Monday, April 10. Drainage installs will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7; this will require night crossings - temporary lane shifts in a contraflow direction - in order to provide an installation workzone.

At Plaza 5 in Chicopee, installation of lighting cabinet bases will take place Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4; lighting conduit installation will take place form Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14.

At Plaza 6 in Chicopee, installation of lighting cabinet bases will take place Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6.

At Plaza 7 in Ludlow, installation of lighting cabinet bases will take place Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12.

At Plaza 8 in Palmer, installation of lighting cabinet bases will take place Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.

DISTRICT 3

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Skanska/McCourt, MassDOT’s contractor for the District 3 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. At Plaza 11, some night-shift work will be required between 11:00PM on April 12 and 7:00AM on April 13.

At Plaza 9 in Sturbridge, drainage work will take place throughout the period covered by this look-ahead. Demolition of the former toll plaza building will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7; and the extension of workzone barriers will take place Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4.

At Plaza 10 in Auburn, additional widening and temporary paving of Ramp F, which connects I-90 to Route 12 Westbound, will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. Full depth construction and paving work will take place from Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14.

At Plaza 10A in Millbury, drainage work will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Temporary paving of the I-90 Westbound off-ramp will take place Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13.

At Plaza 11 in Millbury, electrical work will take place from Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14. Full-depth paving will take place Wednesday, April 12 and Friday, April 14; with micromilling of Ramp D, which connects I-90 Westbound to Route 122, and the mainline ramp occurring during the early hours of Thursday, April 13.

At Plaza 11A in Millbury, drainage work will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Setup of a new work zone along with associated temporary traffic shifts will take place Monday, April 3.

At Plaza 12 in Framingham, full-depth grading and paving will take place Monday, April 3. Widening and paving of Ramp F, which connects traffic from I-90 to Route 9 Eastbound, will take place from Tuesday, April 4 to Friday, April 7. Installation of temporary work zone barrier in preparation for Stage 3B will take place from Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14.

At Plaza 13 in Framingham, widening of Ramp H, which connects I-90 Westbound to Route 30, will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. Full depth excavation and paving will take place Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12. Setup of a new work zone and associated traffic shifts will take place Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.

DISTRICT 6

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, DW White Construction and SPS New England, MassDOT’s contractors for the District 6 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. DW White will continue their work at the Weston Toll Plazas. SPS New England will continue their work at the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel Toll Plazas. The majority of work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. Certain work at both the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel locations will require the use of nighttime shifts. At Allston-Brighton, this will include work at Plazas 18, 19, and 20, at various points throughout the look-ahead period; see below for details. At the Ted Williams Tunnel, double-shifts including night-work will take place on April 3, 4, 5, 13, and 14.

Weston

At the Weston Toll Plazas, DW White will continue construction on Ramp R, connecting I-90 Westbound and Route 128. This includes continued excavation work and the processing of demolition spoils, which will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead.

Along the I-90 mainline, rebar installation and the forming and pouring of retaining wall will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. No work will occur along the mainline during the week of Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14.

At Ramp J, which connects I-90 Eastbound to Route 128, and Ramp L, which connects Route 128 to I-90 Westbound, concrete repairs at the Park Road Bridge will take place from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. In addition, pier protection and rebar installation at the Park Road Bridge will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead.

Allston-Brighton

At Allston-Brighton, SPS New England will continue work at Plaza 18 Eastbound and Westbound, Plaza 19 Eastbound and Westbound, and Plaza 20. Plaza 18 connects I-90 Eastbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Westbound. Plaza 19 serves the I-90 mainline. Plaza 20 connects I-90 Westbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Eastbound.

At Plaza 18 Eastbound, the installation of retaining wall precast lagging panels will take place from Monday, April 3 to Saturday, April 8, and again from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12. Installation of retaining wall cap and barrier wall will take place throughout the week of Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14. Back-fill of the retaining wall and grading of the ramp will occur from Thursday, April 6 to Saturday, April 8, and from Monday, April 10, to Friday, April 14.

At Plaza 18 Westbound, installation of the bulkhead closure wall will take place on Monday, April 3. Installation of drainage structures on the high-speed side will occur during night-shifts on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14. This drainage work requires the closure of the left lane on the ramp.

At Plaza 19 Eastbound, installation of single face barrier will occur from Thursday, April 6 to Saturday, April 8. Fine grading of the sub-base will occur on Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4, in preparation for installation of dense grade base from Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 7, and from Monday, April 10 to Tuesday, April 11. Light pole bases will be installed from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12. Installation of drainage and electrical structures on the low-speed side will occur during night-shifts from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7, and from Monday, April 10 to Wednesday, April 12. This work requires lane closures on the eastbound low-speed side.

At Plaza 20, installation of drainage structures and pipe will occur Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4. Installation of dense grade base will occur throughout the week from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7. Installation of drainage structures and pipe on Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13 will require closure of the ramp shoulder, so will be performed during night shifts.

In preparation for Stage 2A, excavation of the westbound median and building of the Stage 2A roadway will continue during day shifts throughout this work period, excluding the weekend of April 8 and 9.

Ted Williams Tunnel

At the Ted Williams Tunnel, SPS New England will perform work at both Plaza 31, connecting Harborside Drive and the Airport to I-90, and at Plaza 37, connecting Route 1A to I-90.

At Plaza 31, Stage 2 work to survey and plan for paving will occur on Friday, April 7. Stage 3 at Plaza 31 begins with pavement micromilling - including a night-time shift - on Monday, April 3. Spray-applied waterproofing will be applied during day shifts from Monday, April 10 through Wednesday, April 12. Pavement will be installed in double-shifts on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.

At Plaza 37, pavement on the Booth C island will be installed on Monday, April 3. Pavement micromilling will occur in double-shifts including night-time work on Tuesday, April 4 and Wednesday, April 5. Existing sidewalk at the Plaza Building will be removed on Monday, April 10; the granite curb removed & reset on Tuesday, April 11; and the new sidewalk poured on Wednesday, April 12. Spray-applied waterproofing will be applied during day shifts on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.
