Toll Plaza Demolition Project

Bi-Weekly Look Ahead - June 12 to June 24

Work at all 23 work locations is trending on or ahead of schedule. Each contract has its own unique traffic management and construction management plan.

Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

District 1

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, J.H. Maxymillian Inc., MassDOT's contractor for the District 1 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work will be performed around the clock, from Monday, June 12 to Thursday, June 15, and from Monday, June 19 to Thursday, June 22. 10 hour first and second shifts will occur on these days, along with 8 hour night shifts from 11 PM to 7 AM. No work will occur on Friday, June 16 and Friday, June 23, to accommodate weekend travelers. All work is progressing on or ahead of schedule. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 1 in West Stockbridge, drainage work in the median, fiber optic cable installation, median restoration and Phase 4 rock cut along the left side of Ramp E, connecting I-90 Westbound to Route 41, will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead. Removal and resetting of traffic barriers will take place Wednesday, June 14, Thursday, June 15 and again on Monday, June 19 and Tuesday, June 20. Guardrail installation will take place Thursday, June 15 and again Monday, June 19 and Tuesday, June 20. In addition, paving of the mainline in both directions, Phase 4 drainage along Ramp A, connecting Route 41 to I-90 Eastbound, and full depth reconstruction will take place between Monday, June 19 to Thursday, June 22.

At Plaza 2 in Lee, site lighting, drainage work, full depth road construction and ramp paving will take place from Tuesday, June 13 to Thursday, June 15 and again from Monday, June 19 to Thursday, June 22.

District 2

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Middlesex Corporation, MassDOT's contractor for the District 2 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work at all locations within District 2 is trending on or ahead of schedule. Work will be performed project-wide during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 3 in Westfield, full depth construction of the stage 5 area will take place Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16, curbing installation will take place Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15, building of the median will take place from Monday, June 19 to Thursday, June 22, and preparation for milling and paving will take place Friday, June 23.

At Plaza 4 in West Springfield, the installation of pier protection barrier will take place Monday, June 12 to Wednesday, June 14, reconfiguration of traffic into Stage 5 will take place Monday, June 12 and full depth construction of the Stage 5 area will occur from Tuesday, June 13 to the end of this look-ahead.

At Plaza 5 in Chicopee, building of the median will take place Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16, reconfiguration of traffic into Stage 5 will take place Monday, June 19, removal and discarding of pavement will take place Tuesday, June 20 to Thursday, June 22, and miscellaneous drainage and conduit work will take place Thursday, June 22 and Friday, June 23.

No work will take place at Plaza 6 in Chicopee.

At Plaza 7 in Ludlow, backfilling of the building foundation will take place Monday, June 12, drainage installation will occur from Tuesday, June 13 to Friday, June 16 and the installation of lighting conduit will take place from Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23.

At Plaza 8 in Palmer, removal of the median and temporary paving will take place Monday, June 12, reconfiguration of traffic islands for Stage 3 will take place Tuesday, June 13 and drainage installation will take place Wednesday, June 14 to Friday, June 23.

District 3

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, Skanska/McCourt, MassDOT's contractor for the District 3 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. Work at all locations within District 3 is progressing on or ahead of schedule. Most work will be performed project-wide predominately during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:00PM, Monday to Friday. Certain work at plazas 11A and 12 will require the use of night time shifts. Work will take place at select locations on Saturday, June 17 and Saturday, June 24. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

At Plaza 9 in Sturbridge, drainage work and full depth construction will take place Monday, June 12 to Saturday, June 24, including Saturday, June 17.

At Plaza 10 in Auburn, removal and resetting of edging will take place along Ramp F, connecting I-90 to Route 12 Westbound, full depth construction will take place Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13, with full depth paving on Wednesday, June 14 and removal and resetting of the barrier on the median ramp taking place Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16. In addition, median removal will take place Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23.

At Plaza 10A in Millbury, full depth construction will take place Monday, June 12, full depth paving on Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14, curbing installation on Thursday, June 15 and milling underneath the guardrail on Friday, June 16. Removal and resetting of the guardrail will take place Monday, June 19, signage installation on Tuesday, June 20, with striping and removal and resetting of the temporary barrier taking place Tuesday, June 20 to Thursday, June 22, and drainage and electrical installation taking place Friday, June 23.

At Plaza 11 in Millbury, island removal and full depth paving will take place Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16, the installation of vertical curb will take place Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16, full depth paving will take place Monday, June 19, traffic switch work and line work will take place Tuesday, June 20 and full depth construction on Wednesday, June 21to Friday, June 23. In addition, installation of new electrical service by National Grid is expected between Monday, June 12 and Friday, June 16.

At Plaza 11A in Hopkinton, drainage work will take place Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 23 and ramp milling will take place during the night hours of Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13.

At Plaza 12 in Framingham, gore area construction along Ramps C and D, the I-90 Eastbound and Westbound off ramps, will take place Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16, removal and resetting of edging will take place Wednesday, June 14. Ramp milling will take place during night hours on Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14. As part of Stage 4, modification of the rock fill and ditch line related to drainage work will take place Monday, June 19 through Friday, June 23.

At Plaza 13 in Framingham, gore area construction along Ramps C and D, the I-90 Eastbound and Westbound on ramps, will take place Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13, removal and resetting of edging will take place Tuesday, June 13, and millings under the guardrail will take place Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15. Additional gore area construction will take place along Ramps F and H, the Route 30 Eastbound and Westbound on ramps, Wednesday, June 14 to Friday, June 23, along with furnishing and installation of the guardrail on Friday, June 16. Full depth paving and signage installation will occur Monday, June 19 and striping work and removal and resetting of the work zone barrier will occur Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21.

District 6

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, DW White Construction, SPS New England and S&R Corporation, MassDOT's contractors for the District 6 I-90 Toll Demolition Project, will continue construction operations. DW White will continue their work at the Weston Toll Plazas, SPS New England will continue their work at the Allston-Brighton and Ted Williams Tunnel Toll Plazas and S&R Corporation will continue work on demolition at the Sumner Tunnel Toll Plaza. Work at all locations is progressing on or ahead of schedule and set to be completed at the same time in November of 2017.

The majority of work at Weston, Allston-Brighton, Ted Williams Tunnel and the Sumner Tunnel will be performed during standard working hours. For Weston, this is between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, Allston-Brighton, between 6:00 am and 4:30 pm and for the Ted Williams Tunnel and Sumner Tunnel, between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Certain work at the Weston Toll Plaza will require the use of shifts on Sunday June 11, Saturday June 17, and Sunday June 18 and Saturday, June 24, as well as night work shifts throughout this work period between 8:30 pm and 5:00 am. Certain work at the Allston-Brighton interchange will require the use of nighttime shifts between 8:30 pm and 5:00 a.m. and weekend shifts, on Sunday, June 11 and Sunday, June 18. Please note that all work is contingent upon the weather.

Weston

At the Weston Toll Plazas, DW White will continue construction on Ramp R, connecting I-90 Westbound and Route 128. This includes the processing of demolition spoils, full excavation, installation of drainage and site lighting throughout the period covered by this look-ahead. Additionally, on Monday and Tuesday June 19 and 20, guardrail will be installed, and from Tuesday to Friday, June 23, paving will occur.

Along the I-90 mainline, forming and pouring of pier protection in the westbound direction throughout the week and eastbound direction beginning on Thursday and continuing through the rest of the week. Removal and resetting of the eastbound and westbound temporary barriers will take place throughout the period covered in this look-ahead, including Saturdays and omitting Fridays. Additionally, installation of drainage and site lighting, and full depth roadway box construction will occur throughout this work period, not including weekends. Forming and pouring of median barrier cap will occur Wednesday June 21 through Saturday June 24. On the westbound mainline, paving and shimming will be conducted over the full period covered by this look-ahead including Sunday June 11 and 18. Installation of vertical sign structures will occur on Sunday June 18, and installation of sign truss and signs will occur on Monday and Tuesday June 19 and 20, both during night shifts. Ramp R, connecting I-90 Westbound with I-95 Northbound, will open permanently overnight between Friday June 23 and Saturday June 24.

At Plaza 1C-14 and the associated ramps, the following operations will occur throughout the work week and Saturdays: drainage installation; electrical ductbank installation; forming and pouring of pier protection at the Ramp G bridge (connecting I-95 Southbound to I-90 Eastbound). Additionally, over the first week covered by this look-ahead, bridge pier repairs will occur at Ramp G. Removal and resetting of temporary barrier will occur Mondays through Saturdays (omitting Fridays) at Ramp L (connecting I-95 to I-90 Westbound) and Ramp J (connecting I-90 Eastbound to I-95 or Route 30).

At Plaza IC-15, electrical ductbank installation will occur throughout the week.

Allston-Brighton

At Allston-Brighton, SPS New England will continue work at Plaza 18 Eastbound and Westbound, Plaza 19 Eastbound and Westbound, and Plaza 20. Plaza 18 connects I-90 Eastbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Westbound. Plaza 19 serves the I-90 mainline. Plaza 20 connects I-90 Westbound traffic to Cambridge Street, and Cambridge Street traffic to I-90 Eastbound.

At Plaza 18 Eastbound, the installation of granite edging will take place Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13, the installation of millings underneath the guardrail will take place Wednesday, June 14 to Friday, June 16 and again on Monday, June 19. Line striping and removal of the temporary barrier will take place Tuesday, June and Wednesday, June 21.

At Plaza 18 Westbound, the installation of granite edging will take place Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13 and line striping along resetting of the work barrier will take place Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15.

At Plaza 19 Eastbound, the installation of drainage and electrical work will take place on the low speed side from Sunday, June 11 to Thursday, June 15 and again from Sunday, June 18 to Thursday, June 22. The installation of bridge pier protection will take place from Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16 and the excavation and loading of reclaimed material will take place from Sunday June 18 to Thursday, June 22.

At Plaza 19 Westbound, the installation of bridge protection barrier will take place along the low speed side of Ramp B from Monday, June 12 to Friday, June 16.

At Plaza 20, line striping and traffic switch work on the westbound side will take place Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13. Line striping and traffic switch work will take place on the eastbound side Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15. The installation of bridge protection barrier will take place Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23.

The installation of tie-backs and whalers will take place throughout the project side from Monday, June 12 to Thursday, June 15 and again from Sunday, June 18 to Thursday, June 22. The installation of lagging will take place from Tuesday, June 13 to Friday, June 16 and again from Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23. Excavation of the westbound median and construction of the phase 2A roadway will occur from Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23. Tie-back work and excavation work will require the use of both day and night shifts.

Ted Williams Tunnel

At the Ted Williams Tunnel, SPS New England will perform work at Plaza 37, connecting Route 1A to I-90. No work will take place at Plaza 31, connecting Harborside Drive and the Airport to I-90, during this time period.

At Plaza 37, the forming and placing of concrete for island guardrail pockets, along with the installation of guardrail will take place between Tuesday, June 13 and Friday, June 16. All other work awaits the arrival of manhole castings.

Sumner Tunnel Entrance

Work is currently taking place at the entrance of the Sumner Tunnel to evaluate existing and future traffic conditions during construction and make further changes to the temporary configuration as needed.
