About the Project

The Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge (U.S. Route 1) is in need of repair to continue service through the 21st century. Work on the Chelsea approach spans will take place between 2018 and 2020.

Route 1 Northbound (lower deck) will undergo steel repairs and Route 1 Southbound (upper deck) will be repaved. The Everett Avenue Ramp, the southbound on ramp, will be resurfaced and undergo steel repairs. The on ramp at Beacon Street will undergo deck rehabilitation. Work will also include construction of a new parking area.

Project Fact Sheets are available in English and Spanish. They include a summary of the construction schedule, and anticipated traffic impacts.

Construction and Traffic Management

Construction work is scheduled to begin in spring of 2018 and is scheduled to conclude in summer of 2020.

  • 2018 - Work will include repairs to the upper and lower decks, followed by paving, repairs and resurfacing of both the Beacon Street on ramp and the Everett Avenue off ramp.
  • 2019 - Work will include utility installation to prepare the future parking lot as well as upper and lower deck repair and paving.
  • 2020 - Repairs to the lower deck will wrap up. Curbing and paving of the new parking lot will occur.

For more info, read our project fact sheet and check out the presentation on the project.

MassDOT and its project team understand that construction staging and construction period traffic management are significant concerns for commuters. On Route 1 Northbound (lower deck), one lane will be closed throughout each construction season. Lane closures on Route 1 Southbound (upper deck) will occur during off peak hours. During ramp work, crews will make every effort to keep closures to a minimum. The public will be informed in advance of all work impacting traffic.
