Current Construction Activities: April 20 to May 18, 2018

Throughout the month beginning April 23, 2018, J. F. White, MassDOT’s contractor for the Tobin Bridge Rehabilitation Project, will continue construction operations. Most work site-wide will be performed during the standard working hours of 7:00AM to 3:30PM. Work will also take place on Saturday, April 28, Saturday May 5 and Saturday, May 13.

From Monday, April 23 through Saturday, April 28, crews will install a SafeSpan suspended working platform below the lower deck of the Chelsea approach spans. One lane will be closed on Boatswains Way during daytime hours. This has been coordinated with the City of Chelsea. Crews will install suspended platform below the lower deck from Williams Street to Everett Avenue from Monday, April 30 to Friday, May 18. This work has been coordinated with the City of Chelsea and will require police details at Williams Street and 2nd Avenue. Crews will install blast lines and hoses on the lower deck platform Monday, April 30 through Friday, May 18. The safety fence will be removed on the lower deck of the bridge (Route 1 Northbound) Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 18. Temporary fence will be installed throughout the week of Monday, May 14.

The lanes on the lower deck (Route 1 Northbound) will be narrowed to accommodate a 5’ work zone in the shoulder starting mid-May through the 2018 construction season - details regarding this operation will be forthcoming in a separate release.

The gutters on the upper deck of the bridge (Route 1 Southbound) will be cleaned throughout the week beginning Monday, April 23 and continue throughout the week of Monday, April 30.

TranSystems will perform steel inspection and a containment system will be installed at the Beacon Street off ramp on Monday, April 23. Crews will begin blasting on the Beacon Street ramp for the t-grid and repairs from Tuesday, April 24 through Friday, April 27.

From Monday, April 23 through Friday, May 4, crews will set up Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) at the Everett Avenue Southbound on ramp. This work is associated with a one month ramp closure, currently scheduled to begin Sunday, May 6 - details regarding this operation will be forthcoming in a separate release. Crews will begin milling the Everett Avenue ramp Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 18. The ramp will be waterproofed throughout the week of Monday, May 14.

Daily off-peak lane closures, between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. will supplement the extended shoulder area for safety during impactful operations. Lane closures are necessary to create a safe work zone; drivers are asked to be aware of possible lane closures for their own safety and that of the project team. Please also note that all work is contingent upon the weather. No work will occur on the weekends unless explicitly noted above.
