Welcome to the community webpage for the Route 9 stimulus construction project! MassDOT will use this web page to keep residents and businesses regularly informed with information about the construction phases of the project, including planned lane and ramp closures.
The $12.5 million federal stimulus American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) road project is part of Governor Deval Patrick's Massachusetts recovery plan to secure the state's economic future.
The project, managed by MassDOT, consists of the micro-milling and resurfacing of approximately 7.8 miles of Route 9 beginning at Walnut Street in Natick and ending at the Framingham / Southborough Line. The work also includes the ramps at Route 27 in Natick and Route 126 in Framingham. The first stage of the project including the major roadway work will be completed by Nov 2010. The entire project will be completed by June 2011.
After the winter shut-down, beginning during the first full week in April, and as weather permits, the contractor will do a thorough cleaning of the catch basins and drainage pipes throughout the project. Some of the other activities which will occur include completion of some miscellaneous sections of sidewalks and wheel chair ramps, curbing, guard rail, signs, loam and seeding, and any winter damage repair or clean up as required. Milling on Rte. 126 over Rte. 9 is expected to begin in late April. The continuation of the permanent traffic markings should begin in May.
Other major work includes:
Pedestrian improvements including wheelchair ramp upgrades with new detectable warning panels; crosswalk striping upgrades; sidewalk upgrades; and new sidewalks in areas of significant pedestrian activity.
Bicycle improvements including: loop detection for bicycles; improved bicycle signage; and a wider edge line to improve delineation between the shoulder and travel lanes.
Safety upgrades including: new recessed pavement markings; new recessed roadway reflectors; guardrail end treatment upgrades and guardrail repairs including new guardrail reflectors; and trimming of overhanging tree limbs.
Drainage improvements including: new drainage and drainage repairs in the vicinity of Route 126; and the complete cleaning of the existing drainage system.
