Bridge Reconstruction & Ramp Improvements - About This Project

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing bridge superstructure, which carries route 12 (North Main St. Bridge) over Route 2, in Leominster MA. View an aerial image of the intersection. The project will also increase the vertical clearance of the bridge and make modifications to the existing ramps to improve overall safety at the interchange. The project was started on April 5, 2013 and is scheduled for completion by late fall of 2014.

Proposed Work

This project includes replacing the bridge superstructure and bearings as well as upgrading the bridge rail and approach guard rail. The project will also modify the roadway profile in order to increase the vertical clearance of the bridge. The vertical profile of the bridge will be raised approximately 21 inches in order to increase the vertical clearance under the bridge to a 16 foot minimum.

In addition to the bridge work, this project scope includes interchange modifications to improve traffic flow and safety. The primary change involves the elimination of the existing weave area under the bridge in both directions of Route 2 between the on and off ramps. This will be accomplished by eliminating the existing Route 2 eastbound to Route 12 northbound off-ramp and the existing Route 12 northbound to Route 2 westbound on-ramp. New connecting ramps will be constructed from Route 12 northbound to Route 2 westbound and signals wil be installed at the north and south approaches of the bridge. Realignment work on the ramps in the southeast and northeast quadrants of the bridge will also be completed as part of the project.

For more information, please review the proposed interchange improvement map.

Sequence of Work

The bridge superstructure will be removed and replaced in two stages. In the first stage, traffic will utilize the west side of the existing bridge, while MassDOT's contractor demos and reconstructs the new half of the bridge at the east side. Once this work is complete, traffic will be shifted to the east side of the bridge that was built in stage one while the remaining half of the bridge superstructure is replaced.

  • For both stages of construction, there will be two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of traffic and a pedestrian walkway open at all times on the bridge.
  • There will be intermittent temporary lane takings on Route 2 eastbound and westbound in order to complete the necessary bridge work.

Project Updates

MassDOT is committed to public outreach throughout the duration of construction. An issues tracking system will be employed to ensure that problems and concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
