The Neponset River Bridge was constructed in 1970, and serves as a major artery between Quincy and Boston over the Neponset River. The bridge is a 24-span structure with three additional ramps. The average daily traffic consists of 70,700 vehicles.

The $33.7 million Neponset River Bridge project began in February 2010, and is funded by the Patrick-Murray Administration's Accelerated Bridge Program. The project will be completed in March 2013, five months ahead of the original scheduled completion date of August 2013.

On Thursday, October 25, 2012, Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray and MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey joined state and local officials to celebrate the substanial completion of the Neponset River Bridge. Minor finish work remains, with any lane restrictions during off-peak travel periods and not affecting the morning or evening commute.

Project Goals:

The goals of the Neponset River Bridge Phase II Rehabilitation Project were to improve the bridge's structural integrity and enhance accessibility.  During Phase II of the project, the concrete deck, expansion joints, sidewalks and lighting system were replaced. In addition, new ADA compliant 8' sidewalks replaced the 4.4' sidewalks and a new access ramp and sidewalk replaced the stairs on the Quincy side of the bridge.

Current Work Schedule:

This project is substantially complete effective Thursday, October 25, 2012.

  • The barrels that have been staged to channel vehicles traveling over the bridge during construction have been removed and drivers now have full use of the bridge.
  • Some minor finish work and punch-list items remain, however any lane restrictions will be done during off-peak travel periods and will not affect normal commuting hours.

Related Work:

Hancock Street Bridge over Sagamore Street, the MBTA Red Lines and the MBTA Commuter Rail in the City of Quincy

  • The Hancock St. Bridge was reopened to two lanes of traffic in each direction on Friday, October 19, 2012.
