What's New

Eastbound traffic is currently using the westbound bypass road as the contractor completes the barrier on the eastbound bypass roadway. Westbound traffic will continue to use the surface roadway until late July when all travel will be in the final configuration.

MassDOT has implemented alternating single lane closures on Massachusetts Avenue north and southbound in the vicinity of the bridge over Commonwealth Avenue. The lane closures will occur periodically, as needed, on weekdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and will continue through August 2018. The closures are necessary for the contractor to install utilities for new street lighting and traffic signals.

About the Project

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is undertaking the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge Replacement Project over Commonwealth Avenue to reconstruct the existing bridges carrying Massachusetts Avenue over Commonwealth Avenue in Back Bay. The contract was awarded to SPS New England, Inc. Accelerated bridge construction techniques will be used to minimize traffic impacts and complete the project as quickly as possible. Coordination with other projects in the area and with the City of Boston is a significant focus.

The project area extends east and westbound on Commonwealth Avenue from Charlesgate East to Hereford Street, and on Massachusetts Avenue between the ramps from Commonwealth Avenue east and westbound.
