Construction Phase Schedule

Stage 1: June 2016 to July 26, 2017 – COMPLETE

This phase included utility work in the vicinity of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, as well as roadway preparation and enabling work for the 2017 shutdown (Stage 2).

Stage 2 (2017 Construction Shutdown): July 26 to August 16 – COMPLETE

This phase included the replacement of the Commonwealth Avenue eastbound and MBTA Green B Line portions of the bridge deck. The following roads and facilities were impacted to allow crews access to the bridge: Commonwealth Avenue between Brighton Avenue/Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square, the Boston University (BU) Bridge, I-90 (Mass Pike), the MBTA Green B Line, Bus Routes 47 and CT2, Commuter Rail Framingham/Worcester Line, and Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited Line.

Stage 3: August 16, 2017 to July/August 2018

This phase includes utility relocations, roadway and traffic signal work, fencing, curb setting, and finishing work on sidewalks.

Stage 4 (2018 Construction Shutdown): July/August 2018

This phase includes the replacement of the Commonwealth Avenue westbound portion of the bridge deck. It will last 15½ days with the following impacts:

  • Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for 15½ days to through vehicular traffic between Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square (local access only). Access will be maintained for patrons of businesses, residents, MBTA buses, emergency services, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
  • The Boston University (BU) Bridge will be closed for 15½ days to all general traffic. Access will be maintained for pedestrians only (bicyclists will have to walk their bikes).
  • I-90 (Mass Pike) in Boston between the Allston Interchange and the Beacon Street Overpass will be reduced to 1 or 2 lanes in both directions for 9½ days. The I-90 East on-ramp from Cambridge Street/Soldiers Field Road will be closed this entire period. The Exit 20 off-ramp from I-90 West (to Brighton/Cambridge/Storrow Drive) will be closed intermittently.
  • The MBTA Green B Line will be replaced with shuttle buses between Babcock Street and Blandford Street Stations for 15½ days.
  • The MBTA CT2 and 47 Bus Routes will be detoured from the normal routes for 15½ days.
  • The MBTA Commuter Rail Framingham/Worcester Line and Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited Line will be impacted for two weekends. Normal service will be in place on weekdays.

Stage 5: July/August 2018 to September 2019

This phase includes final utility relocations along with re-paving and reconstructing the I-90 median. Lane closures and diversions on Commonwealth Avenue in the vicinity of the bridge will be required during this final stage. MassDOT estimates the entire project will be completed in September 2019.

Finished Condition

Detail explained in text

The finished condition will include the following improvements:

  • Dedicated bike lanes on BU Bridge improve safety by eliminating turning conflicts between bicycles and automobiles (shown in green in the image above).
  • Sidewalk and pedestrian walkway enhancements for improved accessibility.
  • A floating bus island for the Route 57 bus at the Commonwealth Avenue westbound & University Road stop, in which the bike lane has been shifted behind the bus stop.
  • A second right-turn only lane has been added for traffic turning onto the BU Bridge from Commonwealth Avenue, and for traffic turning onto Essex Street from Commonwealth Avenue to improve traffic flow.
  • An additional turning lane on Carlton Street.
  • Traffic signal on University Road.
  • Improved MBTA Green Line B branch over the new bridge.
