Comm Ave Replacement

Construction Phase Schedule

Stage 1 (Utility Work and Roadway Prep): June 2016 to July 26, 2017

This phase includes utility projects in the vicinity of the bridge, as well as roadway prep and enabling work for the first shutdown (Stage 2). MassDOT has been repairing the substructure of the bridge and preparing I-90 to move traffic across a moveable median as part of a separate project.

Stage 2 (2017 Construction Shutdown): July 26, 2017, to August 14, 2017

This phase includes replacement of Commonwealth Avenue eastbound and the MBTA Green Line B branch right-of-way. The following roads and facilities will be impacted: Commonwealth Avenue between Brighton Avenue/Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square, the Boston University (BU) Bridge, I-90 (Mass Pike), the MBTA Green Line B branch, Bus Routes 47 and CT2, Commuter Rail Worcester Line, and Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited. See the Traffic Management page for a detailed impact schedule and detour routes and maps.

Stage 3 (Utility and Signal Work): August 14, 2017, to July/August 2018

This phase includes utility relocations and roadway and traffic signal work.

Stage 4 (2018 Construction Shutdown): July/August 2018

This phase includes the replacement of Commonwealth Avenue westbound and utility work. The shutdown will last 15½ days with the following impacts:

  • Commonwealth Avenue eastbound and westbound will be closed for 15½ days to through traffic from Brighton Avenue/Packard's Corner to Kenmore Square. Access will be maintained for local businesses and residents, MBTA buses, emergency services, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
  • The Boston University (BU) Bridge will be closed for 15½ days to all general traffic. Access will be maintained for pedestrians only.
  • I-90 (Mass Pike) will be reduced to 1 or 2 lanes in both directions for 9½ days. A movable median will keep lanes open while giving the contractor access to the bridge. Traffic is likely to be impacted during peak periods.
  • The MBTA Green Line B branch will be closed for 15½ days from Babcock Street to Blandford Street Stations. Shuttle buses will run between Packard's Corner and Kenmore Station.
  • The MBTA Commuter Rail Worcester Line and Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited will be impacted for two weekends. Normal service will be in place on weekdays.

Stage 5 (Final Utility Work and Paving): July/August 2018 to September 2019

This phase includes final utility relocations along with re-paving and reconstructing the I-90 median. Lane closures and diversions will be required during this final stage. MassDOT estimates the entire project will be completed in September 2019.
