The national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for Streets and Highways contains standards adopted by the Federal Highway Administration for application on all classes of highways across the country. Modifications that were deemed necessary to cover local requirements and to incorporate in these official standards the most recent traffic engineering recommendations of MassDOT have been made and are hereby presented as the Massachusetts Amendments to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the Standard Municipal Traffic Code and addenda. These are the official standards of MassDOT, as authorized by Chapter 85, Section 2 of the Massachusetts General Laws.

MassDOT will, upon the request of local authorities, advise municipalities on all aspects of these regulations and controls required.

The standards in this Manual apply to any and all streets and highways regardless of type or class. Where a device is intended for limited application only or for a specific system, the text specifies the restriction on its use.

The Massachusetts Amendments to the MUTCD were adopted in January, 2012.
