Traffic Engineering

MassDOT has established a Policy  and Prioritization tool for the installation of Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), effective June 1, 2012. These are based upon the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 3-62: Guidelines for Accessible Pedestrian Signals, Final Report.

MassDOT is committed to installing APS devices at all new traffic signals at crosswalks with pedestrian indications and at existing traffic signals during any major alteration or reconstruction project, where feasible. The Department will also consider requests to retrofit existing traffic signals with APS devices at MassDOT maintained locations upon a showing of demonstrated need. Requests for retrofits may be made using the APS Request Form.
