Intelligent Transportation Systems are made up of many technologies, with varying uses in Traffic Management.

These devices and control systems support:

  • Management of planned and unplanned incidents that affect the public
  • Congestion management and management of weather related events
  • Collection, control and exchange of data over the state-wide roadway network
  • Traffic management
  • Incident management
  • Real-time traveler information
  • Security, life safety, or facility management operations

MassDOT has been deploying and using Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) throughout the Commonwealth for over 20 years, and has become an integral part of maintaining and operating critical roadways. These technologies provide valuable information and have played an important role in high profile construction projects within the Boston region and throughout the Commonwealth.

The 2014 Annual Report details the projects, plans, and working groups that ensure that ITS technology has been deployed in a uniform and consistent manner, making use of all available stakeholder input and data, and responsive to the needs of the public.

ITS deployment requires collaboration between planning, implementation, and operations. At the core of this process is an architecture that provides overall guidance. The Regional ITS Architectures Website assists planners of ITS projects and also provides useful tools throughout the project development process.

MassDOT uses ITS in combination with incident management and communication procedures to ensure highway safety. The Unified Response Manual (PDF 1.1MB) details the roles and responsibilities of the various agencies and organizations that respond to incidents on highways in Massachusetts.
