Our mission is to provide geotechnical services and support for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of a safe and accessible transportation system for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The Geotechnical Section is an active in-house design and consultant review section providing geotechnical engineering services for the MassDOT Highway Division.
A geotechnical engineer is a civil engineer who has specialized in the design and construction aspects of earth materials. The engineer identifies and solves issues involving soil, rock and groundwater, for structures in and below the ground. While geologists typically have skills in characterization of geologic conditions and processes, Geotechnical Engineers have skills in the development of site-specific foundation design recommendations and criteria for buildings, bridges and highways construction.
