BSO to Sponsor Turnpike Tolls at Interchange 19 on Friday, June 22

Gesture to Celebrate Tanglewood’s 75
th Anniversary Season

 BOSTON   Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey announced today that tolls for both eastbound and westbound drivers at the Allston/Brighton toll plaza (Interchange 19) on the Massachusetts Turnpike will be free for travelers on Friday, June 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., thanks to a partnership with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in celebration of Tanglewood’s 75th Anniversary Season.

Massachusetts FastLane, now E-ZPass, customers will also receive the benefit and will see a credit and message from BSO and Tanglewood on their next statement.

“On Fridays in the summer volume picks up on the Turnpike with drivers destined for a Western Mass getaway,” said Secretary Davey. “Whether drivers are heading home from work or traveling to enjoy the beauty of the Berkshires, this sponsorship by the BSO will be a welcomed tune for our customers.”

“Tanglewood is a straight shot down the Pike from Boston, but a world way with over 500 acres of lush lawn, gardens and unbelievable views, not to mention outstanding music. We hope folks of all ages will come out to Tanglewood this summer for a symphony, pops, jazz, of popular artist concert,” said BSO Marketing Director Sarah Manoog.

Drivers must still stop at the tollbooth or go through the FastLane/E-ZPass lanes with their transponders. The BSO is covering costs for all tolls, as well as the signage announcing the free tolls and any promotional handouts.

In 2011, MassDOT logged 109,264 toll transactions at Interchange 19 on the fourth Friday in June. Of those transactions, 7,590 occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. with 6,066 vehicles passing through the electronic toll collection lanes and 1,524 in the cash lanes.

This type of sponsorship has been done before on the Turnpike. Last November, Zappos.com sponsored tolls as part of its Happiness Campaign on the day before Thanksgiving.
