About This Project

The Magazine Beach Pedestrian Bridge crosses over Memorial Drive in Cambridge at the intersection of Magazine Street. This bridge is a single span steel girder that was constructed in 1953. As part of Patrick-Murray Administration’s $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program, MassDOT awarded a contract to S & R Corporation of Lowell for the replacement of the existing Pedestrian Bridge.

This project was completed during the summer of 2012.

Purpose and Goals

This project consisted of the complete demolition and replacement of the existing pedestrian bridge over Memorial Drive. This bridge had been severely damaged due to vehicular impact. The new superstructure was designed for a 75-year service life, and included the installation of an over height detection system and ADA compliant ramps and code compliant handrails.
