MassDOT strives to provide accurate and effective communication with members of the public. There are various programs, activities, and services within MassDOT that are of importance to the general public, and it is MassDOT policy to take reasonable steps to overcome language barriers to these, at no cost to the limited English proficient (LEP) individual. To this end, MassDOT has begun to undertake the following efforts:
  • We translated our most vital documents into Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese, including our notice of civil rights, compliant procedures, and complaint form. We will translate any of these documents into other languages upon request.
  • We incorporate Google Translate in our website, along with similar translation tools, which may be used to translate site materials into multiple languages.
  • We provide interpreters, upon request, at public meetings.
  • We have translated our state transportation map into Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese.
  • We provided brochures about the MBTA fare increase and service changes in Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean, and Vietnamese.
  • We provide information about projects that impact a neighborhood or that may have a significant impact in the languages spoken in the area.
  • We translate applications, consent forms, and letters containing information regarding participation in a program when needed.
  • We provide flyers, meeting notices, and other announcements in the languages spoken in the affected area.
  • We offer to translate meeting materials, upon request.
  • We post signs and have handouts available at MassDOT customer service offices in the languages spoken in the area.
  • We post notices in non-English community newspapers.
  • We provide sign-in sheets in multiple languages informing LEP clients about available language services.
To determine other language assistance we can provide, given our limited budget, we need your help to identify which programs and activities are most important to you. Your ideas will be used to prioritize our language assistance services. Please rank the following items from 1 to 3 in terms of importance to you, with 1 as not important, 2 as somewhat important, and 3 as very important. You may also suggest other language assistance you may require.
