37 Billion Mile Data Challenge

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), MassDOT, and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech) have opened a public competition, The 37Billion Mile Data Challenge, designed to inspire the technical community to delve into a new trove of anonymous vehicle-use data and discover insights that can inform policy and help the Commonwealth build a more efficient and sustainable transportation system.

Individuals or teams are invited to join the competition, which is now open and ends on April 19th, at www.37BillionMileChallenge.org. There is no fee to participate. Awards will be given to entries that are exceptionally insightful, interactive or actionable. All entries will be posted online, where the general public will have the ability to select an additional People’s Choice Award winner. Prizes include cash, pre-loaded Charlie Cards, souvenir license plates, and more. An awards ceremony will be held on May 1st from 7-9 at District Hall in the Boston Innovation District.

Plan Ahead: Boston I-90 Weekend Lane Restrictions

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) and MassDOT advised motorists of the anticipated traffic impacts that will result from four weekend lane restrictions on the Massachusetts Turnpike that support MCCA's project to remove the ceiling of the Prudential Tunnel.

The restrictions will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on the Massachusetts Turnpike through the Pru Tunnel on the following weekends beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday:

  • March 21 - 23
  • March 28 - 30
  • April 4 - 6
  • April 25 - 27

Traffic congestion during daylight hours is expected to be significant on the Turnpike in Boston in both directions. This will impact traffic on surrounding roadways in the Back Bay and the Charles River roads.

It is also possible traffic will back up onto Interstate 93 south and north of Boston. Because of this, MCCA and MassDOT advise motorists without a destination in Boston during these weekends to use Interstate 95/Route 128 to reach points south and north of Boston.

Motorists destined for Logan Airport are urged to use the Callahan Tunnel or to approach Logan via Route 16 to Route 1A. Travelers should also consider using public transportation during these weekend periods.

Along with delays, motorists entering the work zone, where the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph, should expect to encounter entrance and exit ramp closures and detours in this area during the project. Further details are available on the project website at www.prutunnelproject.info.

To maintain two-way traffic along the Turnpike during the project, traffic will be shifted to two contra-flow lanes on the opposite side of the roadway. For example, when I-90 westbound lanes are closed inside the Prudential Tunnel, westbound traffic will be directed to the eastbound side of I-90, where there will be two lanes of bi-directional traffic. During the eastbound closure, there will be two lanes provided on the westbound side of I-90.

MBTA Late Night Service Begins March 28

Governor Deval Patrick has announced the start date for the MBTA Late Night Pilot Program will be the night of Friday, March 28, 2014. The MBTA will run service 90 minutes longer on all subway and Key Bus Routes on Friday and Saturday nights. This expanded service will allow Boston to continue to compete among other world class cities that offer late night public transportation and make Boston an even more desirable place to live, work and play.

"Late night T service is the result of listening to our citizens and trying to respond to their needs," said Governor Patrick. "World class cities offer late night public transit, to support the workforce and a vibrant nightlife, and Boston is a world class city."

Late night service will operate as it does during the day, serving customers at the same stations and stops. All new trips will be scheduled and will appear on Google, phone apps and the MBTA website. The last Red, Orange, Blue and Green Line trains will depart downtown stations at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights. Extended late night service will operate approximately every 15-20 minutes in most cases, with more frequent service in the core of the system. Individual schedules for each station and route can vary, and customers are strongly encouraged to look at schedules before traveling. Regular rapid transit and bus fares will be charged on late night services.

Late night service will also allow Boston employers to be better suited for recruiting in the technology sector in places like the Innovation District or Kendall Square, with the hope to attract and maintain top talent looking to not only build their careers, but enjoy the social lives they've built here as well. Likewise, service industry workers, the backbone of Greater Boston's social economy who were previously unable to utilize the MBTA for their commute, will now be able to get home more affordably and, in turn, better improve their own lives and the lives of their families.

To help cover the cost of the additional service, the MBTA has launched a sponsorship program and has partnered with leading businesses from the Greater Boston area. The Boston Globe, Boston Red Sox, Dunkin’ Donuts, Suffolk Construction and the Massachusetts Restaurant Association have signed on as the first sponsors of the late night service pilot program.

The Future Boston Alliance (FBA) is launching a grassroots crowd-funding effort to support service as well. FBA will seed the effort with $5,000 and has set a goal of raising an additional $20,000 from residents and riders of the system through crowdsourcing efforts. In total, sponsors are contributing over $1.5 million in support to help cover the estimated $16 million cost of late night service.

Real-time information for buses will also be available for the extended late night service.

Fore River Bridge Public Meeting March 27

A Fore River Bridge Replacement Project Public Information Meeting has been scheduled as follows:

Thursday, March 27, 6:30 – 8:30 PM, The Fore River Club, 16 Nevada Street, Quincy

The purpose of this meeting is to provide an overview the project’s progress over the past several months and provide a preview of coming operations during the spring of 2014, including traffic impacts related to upcoming construction operations. The meeting will also provide residents and other stakeholders within the project area with an opportunity to ask questions of MassDOT's design/build team for the project’s construction phase. Following the presentation, MassDOT staff will hold a question-and-answer session.

The Fore River Bridge Replacement is part of the Commonwealth’s historic $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program to repair or replace structurally deficient bridges across Massachusetts. The Fore River Bridge project includes the complete replacement and eventual removal of the existing temporary span. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016.
