MassDOT "BusPlus" New Regional Service Announced

MassDOT in coordination with Greyhound Lines, Inc., announced new regional transportation services beginning in early March as part of the new BusPlus program to increase the intercity and commuter transportation options available across the Commonwealth and all of New England.

BusPlus is a public/private partnership in which MassDOT provides new regional buses to private for-profit bus companies. The companies in return must deliver regional services improvements and will be responsible for all bus maintenance and operating costs. The federally-funded competitive grant program includes replacement of 31 regional buses with new, state-of-the-art vehicles.

Pru Tunnel Project: I-90 Weekend Lane Restrictions

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) and MassDOT announced four significant weekend lane restrictions on the Massachusetts Turnpike planned to support the removal of the Prudential Tunnel ceiling, an asset owned and maintained by the MCCA.

The restrictions will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on the Massachusetts Turnpike through the Pru Tunnel on the following weekends beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

  • March 28 - 30
  • April 4 - 6
  • April 25 - 27

MCCA and MassDOT strongly encourage motorists planning travel along the Massachusetts Turnpike through Boston during these weekends to consider using public transportation, seek alternate routes and allow additional time to travel through the work zone. Motorists should expect to encounter entrance and exit ramp closures in this area during the project further details are available on the project website at www.prutunnelproject.info.

To maintain two-way traffic along the Turnpike during the project, traffic will be shifted to two contra-flow lanes on the opposite side of the roadway. For example, when I-90 westbound lanes are closed inside the Prudential Tunnel, westbound traffic will be directed to the eastbound side of I-90, where there will be two lanes of bi-directional traffic. During the eastbound closure, there will be two lanes provided on the westbound side of I-90.

In addition to the four weekends, a test of the traffic pattern set-up will be conducted on Friday, March 7 from 9 p.m. to March 8 at 10 a.m.

The timing of the work and the associated lane restrictions coincide with the end of the Callahan Tunnel closure and occur prior to the resumption of steel and painting repairs on the Tobin Bridge.

Callahan Tunnel: Work on Schedule

MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola says construction work is on schedule as part of the $19.3 million rehabilitation of the Callahan Tunnel. The tunnel is scheduled to reopen on March 12, 2014. The work performed by contractor McCourt Construction has included replacement of the concrete deck and installation of pre-fab curbing.

The work schedule following the tunnel reopening includes additional work during the next several months requiring overnight closures between 11p.m. and 5a.m.

Three main detour routes have been established to handle traffic to East Boston through the Ted Williams Tunnel/Massachusetts Turnpike Eastbound, over the Tobin Bridge, or for motorists coming from points north– along Route 16 East to 1A South.

Boston Logan Travelers are strongly encouraged to take Logan Express or Public Transportation to Logan International Airport. There are also Water Transportation Services to the airport from Quincy/Hull and Boston.


MBTA Government Center Closing: Public Meetings

The MBTA Government Center Station will be closed beginning on Saturday, March 22, 2014, for two years while crews reconstruct the station into a fully accessible, safer, modern, more comfortable facility. The station will reopen in spring 2016.

Public presentations regarding the Government Center Project were previously held at six separate locations in and around the Boston area. Additional upcoming public meetings include:

The Government Center Station Improvements Project will combine improvements to the Green Line Station, Blue Line Station, and Cambridge Street/Government Center Plaza that will bring the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Green and Blue Line Station improvements will include a new head house structure as the primary entrance, raised platforms to provide accessible boarding of the Green Line trains, new elevators from the street to the Green Line level as well as from the Green Line level to the Blue Line level, new escalators, expanded fare collection area, and other mechanical, security, lighting and interior improvements. The project will also include reconstruction of Cambridge Street and a portion of City Hall Plaza in the vicinity of the Station to provide accessible paths of travel to the station.

Travel Impact

During the station closure beginning on March 22, both Blue and Green Line trains will pass through Government Center Station but will not stop there. If your trip usually included Government Center Station, please allow an additional ten to fifteen minutes for your travel.

The recommended path of travel for Green Line customers desiring access to the Blue Line is to travel to Haymarket Station and transfer to the Orange Line toward Forest Hills (southbound). Customers should transfer to the Orange Line at State Street Station for Blue Line connections.

The recommended path of travel for Blue Line customers desiring access to the Green Line is to travel to State Street and transfer to the Orange Line toward Oak Grove (northbound). Customers should then transfer at Haymarket Station for Green Line connections.
