93 Fast 14 Satisfaction Survey


MassDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are seeking feedback on the Medford 93 Fast 14 Project. The successful, ambitious project replaced 14 bridges in ten weekends during the summer of 2011, compressing a four year project into a single construction season.

To accomplish this, the project used innovations including accelerated bridge construction methods, advanced concrete, and design/build contracting.

The project team also performed comprehensive outreach and communication activities to help prepare road users, businesses and communities for the construction of the bridges.

A brief survey, funded by an FHWA grant, seeks to measure satisfaction with the bridges and the technology used to replace them, and identify which communication methods people found most useful. The FHWA developed the survey and will analyze the responses.

MBTA: Fare and Service Proposals, Public Outreach

MassDOT this week released proposed fare increase and service reduction plans for the MBTA aimed at closing a projected $161 million budget gap for fiscal year 2013. Earlier estimates projected the gap would total approximately $185 million for FY13. The MBTA has taken aggressive steps to reduce that deficit: reducing energy purchase costs, planned introduction of single person train operation on the Red Line, encouraging MBTA employees to enroll in more affordable health insurance plans and other operating and administrative efficiencies. However, growing debt service costs associated with capital projects, significant increases in maintenance costs for an aging fleet and higher costs for the RIDE mean additional solutions are necessary.

The proposed fare increases and service reductions released today are aimed at closing the FY13 deficit.

"While the MBTA continues to identify and adopt strict measures to close the budget gap, less costly ways of doing business and additional revenue-generating measures are necessary," said MassDOT Transportation Secretary and CEO Richard Davey. "I am confident with the public’s involvement in this process we can review the study, propose recommendations, and together generate new revenue to continue the progress the MBTA has made in serving its customers.”

In order to fully engage transit users in the process, the MBTA will host more than 20 public hearings over the next several months. A final fare increase and service reduction recommendation will be made to the MBTA’s Board of Directors this Spring and changes will be implemented on July 1, 2012.

In addition to rising operating costs, annual revenues continue to be insufficient to fund the system. Sales tax revenue allocated to the MBTA has increased by only 0.08% annually since fiscal year 2001, resulting in growing budget gaps since the orginal projections were made with the expectation of forward funding. While the MBTA was a beneficiary of the 2009 sales tax increase, the annual growth in sales tax revenues is not enough to address continuing increases in the cost of service on all modes.

As only one of two transit properties in North America that has not raised fares over the last five years, the MBTA has worked hard to identify ways to save money and reduce costs, while improving customer service. From investments in accessibility improvements to use of modern technology to improved transparency, the MBTA is committed to responding to the needs of its customers.

Waltham: Winter Street Bridge Completed

MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey has announced the completion of the $23 million Winter Street Bridge reconstruction project over Rt. 128 in Waltham.

“Governor Deval Patrick has made bridge and roadway infrastructure improvements a priority in his Administration,” Secretary Davey said. “Residents, commuters, local business and business travelers are already benefitting from the newly reconstructed Winter Street Bridge. Projects like this one help to fuel a healthy economy.”

Along with the addition of three travel lanes, the project, which began in 2005, also doubled the size of the intersection at Wyman Street and increased the ease of navigating the on and off-ramps to Route 128.

Innovative project sequencing by MassDOT allowed for the relocation and continued infrastructure support of major utility lines during demolition of the old bridge structure and construction of the new bridge abutments.


MassDOT Board February Public Meeting

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors will hold its next regular public business meeting on Wednesday, February 1 , 1:00pm, MBTA Board Room, Suite 3910, State Transportation Building, Boston.    

 The MBTA Board will meet first at 1pm, followed by the MassDOT Board.  All meetings are open to the public. The meeting schedule is available on the MassDOT website.
