RMV, AAA Announce New Service Location in Fairhaven

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), in partnership with AAA Northeast (AAA), announced that the Fairhaven AAA Branch, located at 32 Fairhaven Commons Way, now offers select RMV license and registration services to AAA members.

With the addition of Fairhaven, AAA Registry services are now available at 15 AAA locations. AAA Northeast offers services at offices in Burlington, Framingham, Newburyport, Newton, Peabody, Raynham, Rockland, Saugus, Somerset, South Dennis, Westwood, and Worcester. AAA Pioneer Valley offers services in Hadley and West Springfield.

MassDOT Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney and AAA President and CEO Mark Shaw were joined by local and elected officials to share remarks about the new Registry services available at the Fairhaven location.

"The Registry is committed to identifying and offering new ways for our customers to conduct business across the Commonwealth," said Registrar Erin Deveney. "By working with the Fairhaven AAA branch, we’re offering our shared customers in Southeastern Massachusetts more convenient ways to access Registry services, especially during this busy time of year. The continued expansion of this important partnership increases convenience for AAA members and improves the delivery of services to customers who need to complete their business at an RMV Service Center."

At designated AAA Registry services locations, AAA members can perform select transactions including: driver’s license and ID renewals, duplicate licenses or IDs, registration renewals, duplicate registrations, duplicate titles, and registration transfers. AAA offers its members weekdays and Saturday RMV transaction options. For more information, visit

Customers are encouraged to visit to process over 25 transactions, access checklists to “Get Ready to Go,” and sign-up to receive RMV News.

Methuen: New I-93 Southbound Ramp Open

MassDOT announced a new milestone in the Methuen Rotary Reconstruction Project. The new permanent on-ramp from Route 110/113 Westbound to I-93 Southbound opened to traffic Monday, November 28.

Route 110/113 westbound traffic heading for I-93 Southbound will enter the dedicated on-ramp just west of the new bridge carrying I-93 traffic over Route 110/113. The temporary signal controlling left turns on to the existing I-93 Southbound on-ramp will be removed from service. Signage will be installed to direct traffic to the new ramp. Variable message signs will be positioned in advance to alert the public of the upcoming traffic change.

The $66.4 million Methuen Rotary Reconstruction Project is replacing the existing rotary with a partial cloverleaf interchange to improve safety and reduce congestion. For more information, visit the project website linked from above.

Springfield: I-91 Viaduct Study Public Meeting Set

MassDOT has scheduled a second Public Information Meeting on the I-91 Viaduct Study as follows:

Tuesday, December 6, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
UMass Center at Springfield, Room 014
Tower Square, 1500 Main Street, Springfield

The I-91 Viaduct Study is a conceptual planning study to develop recommendations for a long-term vision for I-91. MassDOT initiated this study to identify existing issues and evaluate alternatives for I-91 from I-291 to the Connecticut State line.

The project team will present an overview of three long-term alternatives for the I-91 viaduct, as well as short and mid-term improvement alternatives. These include above and below-ground options for sections of the highway, new bicycle and pedestrian amenities and connections, and improvements to highway interchanges. The public is encouraged to attend to learn more about the study and provide feedback.

For more information, visit the I-91 Viaduct Study website.

MassDOT, MAPFRE Insurance Encourage Motorists to Prepare for Winter Driving

The Green Line Extension (GLX) Project Interim Program Management Team will host a public meeting as follows:

Wednesday, December 7, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Somerville High School Auditorium, 81 Highland Avenue

MassDOT and MAPFRE Insurance offer helpful tips to ensure that your vehicle is geared up for wintry road conditions:

  • Bring your vehicle in for an inspection. Winter can involve some of the harshest conditions for your vehicle to endure, so have your vehicle checked by a mechanic, and get an oil change at the beginning of the season.
  • Make sure your vehicle’s fluids (oil, antifreeze, etc.) are at optimal levels. Check that your windshield washer fluid is rated for cold weather and that your windshield wipers are in good condition. Ensure that your head lights and tail lights are functioning properly.
  • Equip your vehicle with snow tires. In winter weather traction is essential; snow tires will give you the best possible control during snowy or icy conditions. Snow tires brake much faster than all-season tires, which can help avoid a collision.
  • Verify that air pressure in your tires is optimal. Low air pressure reduces your vehicle’s maneuverability and can damage your tires, so continue to check the pressure throughout the winter season.
  • Plan ahead. Before traveling in potentially hazardous conditions, contact a relative, friend or co-worker so someone knows your travel plans.
  • Create a Winter Survival Kit. Having the proper equipment to deal with unpredictable issues that arise during the snowy season will provide confidence when heading out on the highway.
  • In addition to your preparations, be aware that the MassDOT’s Highway Assistance Patrol (HAP) program, sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance, patrols routes in Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield & Cape Cod (seasonal) during peak coverage hours, Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with extended hours on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) and extended holiday routes in heavy traffic areas. In addition to the HAP vehicles, MassDOT operates an Incident Response Vehicle (IRV) fleet of flatbed tow trucks, also sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance. IRV’s assigned to Interstate 93, the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge, Ted Williams Tunnel, Sumner Tunnel and Callahan Tunnel patrol 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
