Emergency Roadside Assistance

In the event of a roadside emergency, please call 911.

If your vehicle is disabled, go to the breakdown lane to the right of the solid line. Turn on your hazard lights and raise the hood. Remain with the vehicle, but stand on the other side of the guardrail when possible. Do not obstruct the rear lights. It is also suggested that you always carry a flashlight at night and exercise extreme caution.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) provides emergency roadside assistance, sponsored by Commerce Insurance, for motorists whose vehicles break down on our roadways. The patrols provide rapid response clearance of disabled vehicles and removal of road debris.

Our vehicle operators are equipped with cell phones and can help you contact AAA, if the problem your vehicle is experiencing requires service beyond that which the operator is equipped to render. If a vehicle is in an unsafe location, the State Police may authorize immediate towing.

The service is available on most major roadways; Monday through Friday, 6:30AM to 9:30AM and 3:30PM to 6:30PM. Extended hours are in effect on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90).

The Statewide Emergency Callbox System consists of 854 call boxes located on limited access highways such as I-91, I-93, I-95, I-195, and I-495. The Massachusetts State Police monitor each call box. An audio and visual alarm indicates that a call box has been activated and the display indicates the type of emergency assistance required.
